Swelling/fluid behind knees and in thighs

Hi everyone I’ve recently joined this forum as I am newly diagnosed with lupus and totally uneducated on the illness.

I have Swelling/fluid behind both knees and in my thighs, does anyone else have this? I am not overweight although I do weigh more now which I assume is due to this fluid.

I also have APS/Hughes Syndrome and taking warfarin for life. And I have just last week been diagnosed with Lupus.

The swelling has been permanent for about 2 years now it never goes away but some days it goes worse. My legs feel very heavy and kind of bruised and wake me up when I turn over in bed. The lower leg never swells at all strangely.

Is there anything I can do to help it? I don’t know if it’s a symptom of lupus or APS the doctors are always noncommittal. I had scans to check for bakers cysts and that came back negative. I also wondered could it be a symptom of the perimenopause although the doc did say lupus can attack your joints just wasn’t sure if he meant with fluid?

Good morning, I just joined this group and saw your post. I have the same swelling and pain and it wakes me up when I turn over in bed. I’ve not been diagnosed with Lupus yet, but have just been sent for another round of bloodwork by yet another doctor. I’ve had 10 years of symptoms and been through 3 different rheumatologists and cannot get a diagnosis. You’re the first person I’ve seen that describes what I’m currently going through. Most of the docs I’ve seen agree something is going on, but what?

Bobby, yes, Lupus definitely attacks your joints. I only have Latent Lupus/UCTD, but I get stiff and a lot of inflammation in my knees (as well as many other places.) I use compression bands. They help a lot. If you can get a copper infused band, for some reason those seem to help even more. And a good soak in a warm bath with Epsom salt. All my best to you! 🙏

Hey, often ppl with lupus have arthritis as their initial symptoms. Even high dose of steroids at times leave heavy deposition of fluids in the body. Once the body is accustomed to the medication these swellings often disappear.
