Hi!

While i read everywhere that Plaquenil is safe during pregnancy, i wonder if anyone knows if there has been any long term follow up of children born to mothers taking Plaquenil during pregnancy? Or are there members with grown up children, that had taken Plaquenil during their pregnancies?

Thanks!

Firstly hydroxychloroquine sulfate is actually manufactured by Zentiva in UK.

(Plaquenil has been discontinued). Click link below.

According to the leaflet info:

“...Do not take hydroxychloroquine if you are pregnant, might become pregnant or think you may be pregnant...

You are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. This is because small amounts may pass into breast milk...ask doctor, pharmacist for advice...

Hi Hidden ,

This information is outdated and contradictory to the advice given by specialists. Hydroxychloroquine has been shown to be safe for the mother and child in many studies and in fact it can help to improve pregnancy outcomes if the mother has lupus and wasn't already taking it. It is also considered safe for breastfeeding.

Hi jemozne ,

There have been some long-term studies following children born to mothers who were taking hydroxychloroquine.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/146... - This study followed up to 108 months and no visual, hearing, growth, or developmental abnormalities were reported in any of the children at the last follow-up.

ard.bmj.com/content/72/Supp... - This study followed up to 48 months and revealed no abnormalities in the children.

Thank you, Paul! That’s reassuring.

Still, it would be nice to have even larger and longer follow-up studies.

Hi jemozne ,

They will come in time. Part of the reason we may not have these yet is that it is 'relatively' recently that they approved using this treatment through pregnancy and breastfeeding and so it will take time to collect the data.
