When the Plaquinil starts working, how much pain relief can one expect?

Hello Aleish,

That's my understanding too -- what farmerfeste has just said. It's not really a pain medication, though it sure did work to take out the joint stiffness in my fingers.

If you are having a lot of pain and specific pain, have a chat to your GP for some supplementary pain medication. And perhaps a further investigation into what is going on in your stomach. Sounds worrying, Aleish.

I was diagnosed two years ago with GCA/PMR and started on 60 mgs prednisone. I also cane down with CfFS and fibromyalgia in 1982. Also have Sjögren’s syndrome. Probably have this overlap illness where all this connective tissue disease shows up.

I’m now on 6 mgs prednisone and can’t wait to be rid of it. I’m allergic to Tramadol but I can have two low doses Vicodin a day and Tylenol

In between. Years ago I tried lyrica but all I got was fat, which I lost when the vasculitis showed up. I never though the gabapentin ever helped. I was told that the Plaquinil takes the inflammation away. So unlike a pain pill that works when you take it, the Plaquinil works to relieve pain because it eventually takes diown the inflammation. My friend was given it years ago for RA and claims it keeps her functioning because of the drop in pain. I’m just beginning the Lupus journey. For me personally the anti inflammatory diet is the trick but so boring because leaves me few food choices. Very depressing to not be able to enjoy food.?

Hopeful that Plaquinil will help enough with inflamation and allow me to cheat without severe pain.

I will attend my fist support meeting in 3 weeks. Looking forward to it. I will be posting and stay close to all on here. I’m also on the GCA/PMR group. They help me with the vasculitis. More valuable and knowledgeable then many rheumatologists.

I’m 75 and fighting this battle for almost 37 Years. Just would like some quality of life before the end.

Re: food options for a healthier diet, have you tried finding a Lupus specific or AutoImmune specific cookbook? Checkout Ana Riesdorf’s ‘Luous Cookbook’. Not every recipe is a winner for me, but there are a lot of great ones. Also, in the beginning of the book she explains the ‘why’ of your food choices and also gives you tips on saving tip and energy in preparing your food. You may want to check it out.
