Hi Familylover, what a very fine name! 🤗 During flares, my gut ceases to function so the consequence is inevitably 'unformed'...just by trial and error, I've learnt to take limited fermented stuff and drink camomile tea while inflamed to get back to normal BM's....if yours is unrelated to flares and long-standing, best to see your GP xxx

PS My rheumy said 'gut? that's not lupus' 🤪 so be prepared to say the gut is 80% of the immune system! xxx

Unbelievable! How can anyone say the gut is not related to Lupus? Like you say, 80% of the immune system is in the gut and the gut and bowel are connected along with everything else in the body! When the gut isn't functioning, nothing functions normally and hence the flare begins.

No wonder so many of us on this site get little help from the medical profession with our symptoms.

Like you, certain foods can set off diarrhoea for me and I sip nettle tea and use herbs as required. We are all different and therefore the foods that set off problems are different for each of us. Likewise, the relief of symptoms is also provided by different remedies. We get to know our own bodies because we have to, we have no choice.

I think the GP is your first call. By trial and error I’ve worked out that nuts give me diarrhoea which is a blow because they are, for me, a relatively healthy highly concentrated source of calories.

Do you have bouts of constipation too? Do any of your meds have gut problems listed as a side-effect?

I agree strongly with eekt about the gut being associated with problems under the rheumy’s remit, but unfortunately many rheumy’s do not.

Hi Familylover,

Welcome to the LUPUS UK HealthUnlocked Community. We offer a free information pack which you can download or request at lupusuk.org.uk/request-info...

Have you spoken to your doctor about this? According to The Lupus Encyclopedia, lupus does not generally involve the stomach. Possible causes of diarrhoea can be side-effects of medication, anxiety/stress, an allergic reaction to food, having a virus, being celiac or having Crohn's disease. There are other possible factors for diarrhoea which is why it is important to speak to your doctor.

Please let us know how you get on, wishing you all the best.
