Hi,

I have had the worst few weeks ever, started with severe stomach pains and I mean severe to the point i couldn’t stand/walk without difficulty on top of this I had the usual upset stomach went to my gp handed in a sample which came back as negative two days later and at this point I couldn’t cope anymore I had almost passed out so my gp sent me to A&E where I got admitted (even at this point the didn’t know it was campy) handed in a few samples when I was in hospital and got a call yesterday saying it was pos for campy.

My upset stomach has settled but the pain and nausea hasn’t, alongside this I don’t feel hungry at all... and that’s with my steroids being doubled. My dr suggested i take antibiotics for precautions due to everything I have going on.

Just wondering has anyone ever had this type of food poisoning before and did you fully recover? It’s strange as I hadn’t ate out or ate anything different to my family and yet I seem to have been the only one affected 😭 and trust all this to happen during my two weeks of annual leave!

Sorry for the long moan and post I’m sore, tired and very fed up.

I. x

Hi imzi , i know exactly how you feel 🤢. 2and a1/2 weeks ago I became really ill with terrible stomach cramps and then the rest . I phoned the gp for advice and he sent anurse out to take bloods and collect a sample . The bloods showed there was an infection but it was a week before the gp phoned with the sample results , he said i had campylobacter food poisoning. I had been out for a meal prior to this starting so he reported it to public health . I only started to feel a bit better yesterday, my appetite has been very poor and i was living on some toast and porridge, i was drinking well though . I am still getting cramps at times but trots have stopped. Gp started me on erythromycin 500mg after got sample results as i was still having bad symptoms I found these very hard to take for a couple of days , awful stomach pain, but it settled and got easier. it has knocked the stuffing out of me , i am forcing myself to eat a bit more as i need to build up my strength again .

Did you take antibiotics ? I hope you start to feel better soon , its a horrible thing!!

So sorry to hear you went through this too, it’s horrendous and doesn’t help when you have underlying conditions also 😭 this is day 10 for me and my temperature doesn’t seem to be going down and I’m really wanting to go back to work next week.

I’ve had a bad reaction to erythromycin in the past so my gp started me on cip 500mg twice a day yesterday.

I’m drained And fed up! Thank you hope your feeling better soon too

Hopefully on day 15 you will start to feel better, if not definitely go back to your gp . Do try to eat a little, even if just toast , best wishes and a gentle hug 💐

Ps just a note , i have had a bad flare of pain in my knee since the weekend, i hoped it would go away as it usually does, instead it’s getting stiffer . I hope this is not a side effect of the food poisoning. I hope you manage to escape any flares . I am reasonably well controlled with rituximab normally. Xx

Oh I’m sorry to hear that, I have been getting joint pains, I read online that campy can cause reactive arthritis? I hope it’s not. Maybe get it checked? I’m usually on ciclosporin but have stopped it for the time being. I hope you are ok dx

I had this several years ago after eating some re cooked chicken. It was bad and it took me a good month afterwards to get back to my normal. Hope you feel better soon.

A month that seems like such a long recovery period, but I’m glad you managed to get back to your normal self with no issues. Thank you for replying.

So sorry to hear that you are going through this. I also had this 2 years ago after eating undercooked chicken. Had vomiting and diarrhoea, was admitted for 4 days for acute gastroenteritis, and was officially diagnosed with lupus (from UCTD). I think i did fully recover after taking antibiotics, except that my period hasn’t come ever since.

Sending you strength and wellness, fight that campy!!!! 👾

It’s so horrible so I feel for what you went through! Glad you recovered after it.

I’m going to fight this!! It’s 5am here and I’m lucky to have slept an hour as I’m so restless and my stomach keeps making noises because I’m starving... funny how one infection can just floor you! 🤦🏻‍♀️
