Involuntary deep breathing

Since Oct 2016 I've been experiencing involuntary deep breathing 8 to 10 times a day.

Most of the time when I'm laying on my bed... Why is this happening?

I assume you mean just odd single deep breaths?

One reason for such breaths is that you haven't been breathing as deeply as your body needs and it signals a sort of "reset" of the nervous system governing breathing by a single deep breath. It is something more likely to happen when lying down and breathing more shallowly. Everyone does it now and again but you are more likely to notice it when lying quietly and not distracted by another activity.

I have this a lot these days - during the day time too. I think it’s as Pro says - something we all do to an extent - but for some it’s exacerbated by a dysfunctional autonomic nervous system caused by autoimmunity.

Certainly this seems to be the case for me. I have had my oxygen saturation levels checked and they seem fine but my Pilates teacher has a thing that I often hold my breath. Maybe my instructor has made me more aware of it because I notice these involuntary deep breaths more now.

I get this when I'm upset or worried and I'm trying to go to sleep, it really hurt my chest when the involuntary breath happens.

I've just added this to my list for my next consultant's visit in March to discuss with the Pulmonary consultant (I also see the Rheumatologist at the same combined clinic).

I get this to not just since deep breaths but for anything up to or over a minute have told gp

Would seem to be nerve damage affecting autonomic nervous system no idea what this means for the future but don't worry about it .
