Vitamin B6 supplementation not good for peripheral neuropathy...
FASCINATING: thanks so much 🌟🌟🌟🌟
I have been taking vit. B1 for 2 years and not 1 gnat bite, instead of 1000. If any help
Hi 1985 mum,
Did he say why as I thought the B vitamins were good for nerve problems?. Thanks for sharing. X
No he didn't say why but he was just checking what supplements I was taking and making sure I wasn't taking too much b6. He said low levels are normally fine but anything over 100mg can give you peripheral neuropathy and people with PN should steer clear of it. I do take it as part of a B complex supp with 50mg of b6 in it which he said was fine for now as I only have very limited PN but he will keep an eye on me and if it starts to worsen he wants me discontinue it. Good news is PN from b6 is reversible! He previously had a patient who was wheelchair bound with PN and they couldn't work out why until they realised she was on b6 and once she stopped it gradually went away.

This second link also mentions the fact that excessive B6 can CAUSE PN:

B6 is needed for neurotransmitters - and perhaps too much B6 messes that up (don't know, just wondering). It is very unusual to find vit B6 deficiency in the western world - pretty much as long as you aren't malnourished you will get enough. So if you are deficient you may need some - or if you are on certain drugs for chemotherapy.
I think it is another of these things where something has been shown to be beneficial in animal studies but it doesn't translate to humans as well as a little of something being a good thing - less is often more in the case of vitamins!
Oops - nearly forgot to say: they may all have B numbers but each B vitamin is different. It is B6 that is being talked about here. Not necessarily the others.
Thanks PMRpro. Very helpful as usual! I was wondering the same thing and agree with the less is more for some things.
And thanks for adding the footnote to clarify and not get us confusable lupies even more confused!😉 (I can now officially call myself a lupie!)
Very interesting read anout B vitamin supplements - can I ask do any of you take Vit D supplements and if so what strength ? Thank you in advance xx
I was given Adcal d3 but like many others don't tolerate it very well so changed to a capsule.Started 800iubut immunologist phoned GP and said up it to 2,400iu daily until March then 1,600 for next 6 months.
Just as the B vitamins have been discussed above there is a difference between D2 and D3 so please do not take large amounts of vit D2 (can cause toxicity) .vit D3 is the one gp or consultant should be prescribing if your vit D levels have shown low on blood test.
So please ask your medical professional to decide which amount you should be supplementing as we are all different.
Thanks .Sometimes these little bits of info can be hugely helpful☺
