Hi

Your GP needs to specify Zentiva brand on the Px, many pharmacies can't be bothered to order it in and will happily fob you off with Quinoric or say its not available ( esp chains eg Boots etc).

I get mine from a small independent chemist without any problems but it took some time shopping around.

Be persistent it is available.

Good luck

It's actually just Hydroxychloroquine made by Zentiva the name Plaquenil is no more. Most chemists can source/order into branch/pharmacy .They need to call their suppliers or search under brand Zentiva then order Hydroxychloroquine .It maybe they are searching for the word Plaquenil which will not show up.B**ts orders my Zentiva brand of it and will quite happily phone up their suppliers to check certain brands of meds are ordered /sent through for me.I am sure most pharmacies will do so if they know the exact word, brand or supplier. If they won't ask them to call your GP and explain why not.

Hi Loraine14,

I've had the same trouble recently but my pharmacist has managed to get it now, the above link was really helpful to me as I was able to quote from it and they couldn't argue with me, the pharmacist told me that there are many brands and they all have the same ingredients, I had to tell him that actually they don't which is why we react differently to different brands, I told him I've done my research and I have a list of all the ingredients of them, the Hydroxychloroquine sulphate is the main ingredient but all the fillers vary! I was surprised at a pharmacist saying this!

I hope this helps.

All the best

Sometimes I do wonder about pharmacists! That's the whole point - different brands DON'T have the same ingredients - the drug is the same, the fillers are not.

I can't tolerate Quinoric either. My prescriptions are done by Boots and they get it no problem. They kept arguing that when the prescription just said Hydroxychloroquine they could give me any brand. I told my GP this and it now has on my prescription MUST BE GIVEN AS ZENTIVA BRAND. Once or twice they have given my Quinoric but I tell them I can't take it and my prescription states Zentiva. They usually have to order it so I make sure I get my repeat in plenty of time, usually when I start my last box.

Quinoric didnt suit me either so my gp put Plaquenil on my repeat script. Shortly after I got a call from the pharmacist saying Plaquenil was no longer available but that she would keep trying......she called back later to say its the brand name Plaquenil thats gone and hydroxychloroquine is whats on the packet. She'd found a supplier with the Zentiva name on..panic over...these days they come in a white box with no company name on at all

Hi Loraine I posted a few years ago regarding your question with Quinoric and also about the Old brand name if Plaquinel you might find this information helpful regarding these to medications and the difference with them and also how to inform the pharmacy on how to get hold of the new ( Zentia Hydroxychloroquine ) which is exactly the same as the sister Sanofi Planquinel.

Quinorc and planquenill do contain the same active ingrediant in equal quantity, 200mg of hydroxychloriquine. There ia a massive difference though in the fillers, in Quinoric there is silica (colloidal anydrous silica) which its self has seen links to autimmune diseases and this silica has an established association with lupus and also is not well tolerated in patients because of this some have a adverse reaction to it.

If you go back to (Plaquinel Hydroxychoroquine) which was made by Sanofi they rebranded it a few years ago and it is now called just HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE SULPHATE made by (ZENTIVA) 200MG FILM COATED. Zenita is a sister brand of Sanofi and they are even in the same building its just a case of the Zentiva brand is now on the box everything else is the same. I talked with a lovely lady a few years ago at Zentiva who explained all this to me, which I was reassured by. She passed the phone over to a college in the same room who dealt with the Sanofi calls and they explained it all in detail. She gave me all the below details which I passed onto Lupus Uk and Paul posted so that we were able to help others to get hold of the newer branded version.

If you need to get this now here are all the details you need to give your pharmacist if they have trouble finding it. All the information was given to me by Sanofi/Zentiva direct.

The product code for the product is what they call a pip number as is 1201730 this will make it easier for the pharmacy if they have any problems finding it.

If for any reason they can not get the product on their system they can ring the customer service line at Sanofi/Zentiva on 01483- 505515.

I have been taking the new ones for over a year now and there is now difference even the box is the same just the name change.
