Just a quick question my doctor told me I need to get yellow fever vacation but it can make you flare up cause I'm planning to go to Africa Angola for a holiday this year. So I wanted to know if anyone has taken it before. Many thanks

I had yellow fever vac before going to Uganda in 2014. It did make me feel as if I had flu for a few days afterwards.

I think yellow fever is a live vaccine which means that it can be risky if you are on immunosuppressants.

I get flares from most vaccines. Best wishes. Clare

Hi Faithing-it,

Yellow Fever is a live (or active) vaccine which means that people who are on immunosuppressants are generally recommended to avoid it.

The best thing for you to do is talk to your consultant as they will be able to make a decision, based on your health, as to whether or not you should receive the vaccine. If they decide that you shouldn't have the vaccine then you should be able to get an exemption letter which authorities might accept instead. If you do get this letter, you should take extra precautionary steps to prevent insect bites.

Okay. Please bear in mind that lupus differs for everybody and factors such as different treatments also need to be taken into consideration. Therefore please remember that any experiences you do read on this site may not be the same as your own.

When I went to Peru in 2007 I got a yellow fever vaccination along with hepatitis and TPD and I had a severe flare afterwords that lasted over a year. I will never get those vaccinations again. Well there is no evidence that that's what caused it but it's just curious that it happened after I got those immunizations . I wish you the very best of luck.

Only you can decide as we are all different - I would meditate on it and ask for an answer from my body - this is how I decide what to do, because I know no-one can tell me what to do. Good luck.

I go to Ghana each year, I am exempt from having the yellow fever jab , so I always carry my exemption letter in my passport. But also because of certain medication s, I hve always used Lariam malaria tablets 1 aweek, but now I am being told to change to a daily form of malaria tablets, which I did not get on with so have gone back to Lariam. But I receive all my other jabs, I only drink bottled water and wash any fruit in the same water, I also make sure to cover myself in Deet Spray or Cream to ward of insects. Hope this info can help. Good luck.
