Hi I'm due to start mycophenolate on the 4th September. I work in a special needs school as the school nurse, my Rheumatoid specialist nurse has advised me to look at a alternative post as she told me I cannot be in contact with any poorly children. Has anyone had this told or similar to that.
That seems a bit extreme to me. I work as a health visitor and certainly come into contact with just about every viral illness making its round in the community. The monitoring bloods for mycophenolate are quite frequent and if you show any signs of infection then get yourself seen by the gp.
Not sure you need to change your job, just going out to the local shop could expose you to infections so I think just the usual precautions, seeing gp as soon as you get ill and regular bloods would be enough
Hi, this is the first time ive replied or posted but your question struck a real chord with me. obviously I don't know your full situation but I wasn't given quite the same advice. I have been taking a high dose of mycophenolate since february along with other immunosuppressants and I work in a dental practice so come into very close contact with people on a daily basis. I wasn't told I ought to look at alternatives I just try to take extra care with cross infection procedures and fingers crossed have had no problems so far, although we are all different. I hope this can offer you some reassurance because I don't know what Id have done if I was told to find different employment, my rheumatology team have been very supportive in keeping me working, maybe its worth having another chat to them? good luck x
Hi rach1971,
That advice does seem a bit over the top. When I was taking MMF I was working as a nurse in Intensive Care looking after patients with severe sepsis. I didn't come to any harm!
Some people seem to catch everything whilst on immunosupressants whilst others are ok, to a certain extent you will just have to suck it and see!
I think this is about u being vulnerable 2 catching anything, sumthing lupus sufferers have 2 deal with, I've taken mycophenolate 4 a few months now and work in a large busy office with aircon! Not good but I've been ok, u can't stop yur life 4 this desease, u just have 2 carry :o)
Hi all sorry I don't have any advice about your meds but I was pleased to read how many of you are working as nurses - I as diagnosed 5 weeks ago and now having haematology investigations I have been on the sick for 6 weeks and I am a paediatric specialist nurse and really struggling with everything - starting to wonder if I will ever be back to work and feel well enough to do those busy stressful shifts - but thank you to you nurses and all as it gives me hope I will return
