There is some issue with the Plaquenil (trade name). Ask your physician to write the script may substitute. I haven't had any difficulty with the Hydroxychloriquine ( generic, or chemical name). Best wishes.
There has been a couple of threads about this in the last few weeks. Sanofi have stopped making Plaquenil however their sister company are now making it and it is supposed to be the same. On the tgread there is a product number for your pharmacist to order it and a customer help line number. I picked up my new meds and repeat prescription for it this week. I cannot take anything else as I get terrible side effects. Good luck finding the thread.
Something is going on with this drug. I take generic in the U.S. In January I had 90 day Rx filled for $135. I went in May for refill and it was $535!!!! I refused it and researched until I found a coupon to lower the price. This is an ancient drug and generic. Should not be this expensive. Some websites claim there is a shortage. I think there is some funny business going on.
We have received reports that a number of people are having difficulty getting hold of Plaquenil and have been informed from their pharmacist that it has been 'discontinued'.
After speaking with Sanofi-Aventis Medince's Information Department (the manufacturers of Plaquenil) we have learned that Plaquenil has now been 'de-branded' to generic but that the same forumulation of the drug will be available through pharmacies if they order Hydroxychloroquine through Zentiva (sister company to Sanofi).
This information will be especially important to those people with lupus who experience negative side-effects from the alternative brand of Hydroxychloroquine, 'Quinoric'.
If your pharmacist has any difficulty obtaining the Hydroxycloroquine with the same formular from Zentiva the product descriptions is: "HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE SULPHATE (ZENTIVA) 200MG FILM COATED" and the 'PIP number' (Product Code) is 1201730. If for any reason they cannot find the product on their system they can ring the customer service line on 01483 505515.
Hi shila, the post that baba just posted is my post i did the other day and paul from lupus uk put it on the needs feed.. I rung zentiva myself the sister company and can confirm that by using the product number the pip code all chemists will be able to order it, i am allergic to all other forms apart from the sanofi barand, the new brand by sister company is the same thing even the box is the same just has Zentiva on it, i have been taking the new form from Zentiva and there is no diff that i can tell. X hope this helps it was very stressfull when i found out the plaquinel was no longer being produced, but after contacting the lovely lady at sanofi she transfered the call through to Zentiva and they gave me everything i needed to be able to share with you all, so that you have all the information you need..
