Hi Steph,

Stop taking steroids.

I was given steroids for overactive thyroid problems many years ago and ended up with 2 hip replacements due to avascular necrosis ((blood not circulating round hip bones). I too am now diagnosed with osteoporosis. All this due to taking steroids. I still occasionally get flare ups. I'm also a allergic to nickel which is something else to watch out for as it's not only in jewellery but in lots of food.

Hi ripon1756

thank you for your reply I was put on steroids due to Lupus but I came of them in Jan this year I've been bisphosphonates for about 18mths but don't seam to have helped as the dexa scan has shown my bones are in a bad way, how do you cope with osteoporosis ? the doc has just changed my pain killers as the other ones weren't working .

mant thanks

Steph

Hi Steph,

Thank you for replying so promptly.

At times it's very difficult coping as I now have a walking stick and a triangle trolley for when I go shopping and I find them a good help to cope.

However, I now suspect that there is a link between my allergy to nickel and my osteoporosis as I've found nickel is contained in lots of food as well as jewellery so I'm cutting out food containing too much nickel - it's a case of trial and error.

Every time I read the many texts from people diagnosed with Lupus, I feel they all have different problems and it makes me wonder if lupus is an actual condition or if it's used to cover a multitude of problems which fall into differing categories, i.e. osteoporosis or rheumatoid arthritis, etc. and that's not to mention the niggling suspicion that allergies, such as allergy to nickel, play a part. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis a couple of years ago as well as being told I had high cholesterol but I think a lot of the medication prescribed actually makes you feel worse. What do you think?

Hi Steph1

Yes sorry to say I too have this problem due to steroids lets hope that you see a better dr than me, mine said you reaped the rewards now pay the consequences charming huh. My steroid intake was stopped for a number years because of this but then I went on to get Myosistis as well, so it was the less of two evils and now I am back on them it's just a case of try and limit the problem as much as possible. I wish you lots of good wishes.

Hi Angus

What is Myosistis ? carnt you report your doctor for saying that . that doctor is bang out of order you didn't ask to get ill , why don't people understand ? I think the problem with people is because they carnt see that u have an illness they think ur ok if that makes sense .

Hi Steph

You are right it is just pure ignorance that some doctors act this way I think at the time he was put out that my rheumatologist had sent me there, as he put it what can I do for you. It was some time ago and since then I have met some lovely doctors who have had my best interest at heart. In answer to your question myosistis is a muscle disease and I have had that now for about ten years but diagnosed only four years ago due to be being on at them for years. My present doctor is wonderful both at the hospital and GP so don't lose heart there are some great doctors who are listening and we just have to keep plodding along. Hope that things start to look a little brighter for you with each passing day. Take care x
