Gastric surgery.

Hello I hve been on prednisolone since 1993 and all in all have put on nine and a half stones in that time. That is another persons body weight attached to mine.

I have Iatrogenic cushings syndrome because of the steroids and Type 2 diabetes. I also developed Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and after 6 years have decided to have a gastric sleeve operation after a lot of careful thought. I am rather scared to put it mildly and was wondering if there is anyone out there that has had gastric surgery and in particular a gastric sleeve operation while on steroids. I am hoping that I have made the right decision but am still unsure.

I would really appreciate your valuable feedback and thank you.

I have not had the gastric sleeve op or anything like it but knowing from my late husband being on long term steroids I would of thought it was extremely dangerous op while on steroids and am surprised that surgeons would consider it.

Can I recommend you join Slimming World, This is not a diet but healthy eating and you can still have treats. They take into count medical problems like Diabetes and people on steroids.

Please go to one of the meetings and talk to the consultant and explain your medical problems and they should be able to set you the right way.

thats a long time to be on steroids. I dont know about this op, but just wanted to say that this must be a horrible thing for you. I lost a lot of weight because I simply couldn't get on and off the loo easily! I know that sounds ridiculous but I got in the habit of eating minuscule portions. And am a bit paranoid about going out and getting 'caught short'. This all coincided with a time I was on pred - but I think it was just about 6 months. It was not good at all for diabetes and I just accepted a bit more (a lot) more pain in order to get blood sugar levels down.

And as for the risks involved in the op, I assume that the people involved will give you a good report to think about. Hope all goes well,

Cathie

I know two people who have had this operation one had bypass and the other a sleeve none of them were on steroids was just a case of eating to much.

The one who had the sleeve has done really well but the one with the bypass has put weight on.

I believe if you are willing to help yourself you will do well but a bypass or sleeve is no grantee to lose weight but I wish you all the best and I hope it works

Hi i have just read your post, i know its an old one, firstly i really dont think a surgeon would operate on you if he thought the risks were too high, talk to your GP or surgeon about meds, my friend had the op and had to stop meds for 3 days before surgery, my friend had the by pass and has lost 9 st, she looks amazing and totally acts like a new person, confident, care free, it is amazing to see her, her transformation has prompted me to take the same route, my Endocrine consultant is all for me having the surgery and i am so excited, YESyou can put the weigjt back on if you dont follow what you are told, i have no idea why some people go to such drastic measures to then eat like they did before, i am also taking myself off to eaters anonymous to try and fix my eating habits before i have surgery, we have all been to slimming classes and lost weight but it quickly stops and wont budge then a bit goes on the demoralisation sets in then we over eat again, its a spiral for us, i hope you had your surgery and all is well with you, let me know how you are doing, i cant wait for my surgery
