I was diagnosed with squamous lung cancer in february this year, I have had chemo and radiotherapy. I want to go on a cruise next February. How soon after being diagnosed did you fly; has anyone been on a cruise where you pick the liner up in the States. If so, what kind of insurance did you take out. Many thanks

Hi Izzyg

I had that kind of NSCLC in 2000. I finished chemo & radiotherapy at the end of September. A year later, we flew to the US. We could have gone much earlier - if we could have afforded it!!

I had/have a Royalties Gold account with RBS., which includes life time travel insurance (till age 70). All I required was a letter from my GP., saying I was fit to travel. No-one asked for the letter, but the insurance company were happy. I think the main criteria is that you are unlikely to take ill due to your cancer, while you're abroad, or flying.

I would suggest you check with your GP., or the CNS, to ensure they are satisfied that you're okay to go.

Good luck. :)

i will thank you - everywhere i had looked so far the premium has been loaded - i.e. costing more than the cruise - but i will have a look - I am obliged

Hi Izzy,

I was diagnosed with NSCLC stage 4 in March 2011. In July we flew to Menorca, then August Spain, October Cannes. I did it all with basic insurance, no lung cancer cover but cover for everything else. The MacMillan nurse said not to bother as in Europe you can use E111 card (reciprocal agreement with NHS) Not that I did have any problems. I then got to thinking that if my scans were good why not go further afield, just with the basic insurance as like you said, the premium for insurance with lung cancer cover was more than the trip! In October my scan was very good so we booked and went to Jamaica in January. My June scan was good too so we went to the USA and traveled around for 3 weeks! We are going to Mexico in October too.

I found out that even in the USA they have to treat people with no insurance, its the Hippocratic oath . Treatment would just be making you fit to fly home but what more do you need. I can't tell you what to do but so far this has worked for me and many more people I have spoken to.

Hope that helps
