Sticky eyes on chemo

Hi

My husband has now had his 6th course of Carboplatin and Pemetrexed and is due to carry on with maintenance Pemetrexed.

He started to get sticky eyes (not infected) from about course 3. It has got steadily worse, especially when he wakes in the morning. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what advice can you offer. Also does anyone know if it will continue / worsen on the maintenance chemo?

Many thanks.

Thanks for your reply Dave. We went to the chemist but as soon as you mention chemo they snatch any product away from you and tell you to see the GP.

Hope you're fighting fit still and keeping yourself and us positive x

hi Goingcukoo

can't understand why they'd take that off you when it's on the shelf and anyone can buy it, it was the same as the drops I'd been given, I checked all the numbers on the box, just a different manufacturer , hope you able to get appointment with the doctors within 2 weeks or phone your chemo unit and explain, they should be able to give you some eye drops as they'll have your husbands notes, then it's just going there and picking them up good luck and hope you all ok take care 100% positive

Dave 😊👍

Hi Goingcuckoo

Sorry to hear that your Husband is experiencing this. Do let the GP or chemotherapy team know so they can prescribe eye drops , ointment, or he may need antibiotic drops. You can continue to clean his eyes in cool water or an eye saline solution that you can get from the chemist. The sticky eyes is usually temporary and settles when the chemotherapy finishes, however it can usually be managed or be made more comfortable for him.

The other alternative would be to see an Ophthalmologist for assessment.

If you wish to discuss anything you can call us on our Freephone nurse led helpline number on 0800 358 7200

Kind regards

I had sticky eyes like your husband on cycle 4 of a similar regime ,I visited the local eye hospital and got some gel type drops not antibiotics which I used when ever eyes became troublesome ,this lasted about a week now eyes back to normal .So don't t worry things like this seem to come and go .Hope things improve soon .Diane

Hi, I am on same combination and have had watery and sticky eyes all through treatment. I went onto maintenance petromexed three weeks ago and they do seem to be easing off a little. I had a course of 4 transfusions over 12 weeks and looked like I was crying all the way through with crystallised tears on waking. I will keep you posted.

Many thanks for your input everyone. The GP prescribed artificial tears for him.

Yes but eventually it will go away! Annoying, especially in the morning when I woke up... no worries it will go away and then something else will hurt or annoy him!
