Fluid on chest and intense pain

Hey everyone, hope you are well. Popping in to update you all after my dad’s surgery. Yesterday, they took him off the epidural and he’s now on Percocet. He’s in lots of pain at the moment and his appetite has been poor. They’ve been slowly getting him out of bed to sit in a chair adjacent to his bed. He won’t be able to go home today as originally planned due to the amount of fluid coming off of his chest. I wasn’t expecting this to be this overwhelming for him but I can tell he’s having a time.

So sorry to hear that I know it's hard on him. But also it's very hard for you to see him like this. Hang in there I'm here if you need someone to talk to and if you need to rant. Love susie jo1948

It’s extremely painful watching him go through this but I’m trying to stay strong for him. Thx Susie Jo. Is hoarseness normal after surgery?

Hi yes it's normal after surgery. They stick a small around long tubing down his throat to his lungs to help him get more oxygen while he's knocked out. It shouldn't stay sore. Your being a very good advocate for your dad. I can tell you Love him a lot. Take care of yourself. I'm here if you need me. Love susie jo1948

Take it one day at a time. As your Dad improves , you will see that he can do just a little more each day; sit a little longer, stand a little longer, walk a little further etc. It may well be a slow go but he will get stronger. Please ensure he does his breathing exercises with the the Aerobika or other flute-like device they should have provided him with. All Best Wishes, judg69

Thx Judg69. Yes, each day he’s improving. He uses the breathing devices provided but not as often as he should I think it’s a little painful.

So sorry dad has this new challenge but it sounds as if he’s where he needs to be. Recovery is a slow process. Judg69’s advice is right on. Yes, it will hurt a bit as he does it but that will help him recover further.

Take care of you, as Susie suggests. The next few weeks your dad is going to need to lean on you a bit so make sure you stay healthy and rest when you can.
