Hello all you lovely ladies and gentlemen. So I go to the gym everyday for an hour and use the treadmill and bike. I keep meaning to ask the lymp nurse if I should wear my compression tights. Does anyone have any thoughts x xπ
Should I wear tight when I'm at the gym: Hello all you... - LSN
Should I wear tight when I'm at the gym
Give it a try! Some people believe it really helps, some people don't.
It is my understanding that you should always wear your garments when exercising. While my leg continued to get larger, once I began wearing the garments the swelling slowed down. I had surgery on my leg 7 months ago and am very pleased with the outcome. I can do any exercise I want but must wear my garments. And yeay good for you going to the gym. It's easy to talk ourselves out of it when lugging around extra weight in a limb.
Hi,
I wear mine when I go to the gym, do Pilates or go walking for exercise. It's recommended on the LSN self management too. The only time I don't wear mine is when I swim, I think that would be just too yucky!!

Yes yes yes wear compression if your Lymphoedema is lower limb!!! I learned the hard way and it's not worth going without compression as you risk irreversible deterioration of your lymphatics. I thought it was fine going without compression at the time, only to find it was the worst choice I could have made π© The LE specialist at St George's Hospital London advised never go without compression when exercising. In my case I now have to wear compression 24/7 due to being too lax about wearing it earlier on when I was still LE stages 0-1.
Hello cct67 thank you for your reply I'm so sorry to hear that we should all start do do what we're told however it's so nice to have a group of lovely people that you can run any worries or questions by wishing you a beautiful day xoxo
Hi Mel
I make my own mind up about Everything . I have Primary LD just wear them when leg gets worse - leg goes back to normal - leave them off. Same for years -doesnβt get worse than ever, Left mothers socks off- she steadily improved-flesh softer - circulation returned
Always see if advice suits us
personally. So much blind faith in professionals irritates me!
Cheers

Yes do wear compression! I double my compression up when I exercise as it really helps to keep the swelling down! My nurse recommended sports compression leggings (or cycling shorts if it's upper leg) such as skins but I find the compression isn't strong enough for me but it may be worth a try - they would def be better than wearing no compression at all!
Thank you Angelil for your reply I have given it a try with my tights on tonight felt not to bad. That interesting I didn't know you could get compression leggings will look into that tonight. Hope your having a lovely day xoxo
Lots of sports brands have compression ranges now as it's supposed to improve an atheletes performance. Skins, under armour and addidas all make them. They are no where near as tight as compression tights but I still think they are better than nothing!!
You should always wear them.
You should always wear your compression when you exercise...except if you swim.. as the water gives a natural compression.
Hi. I have secondary lymphoedema in one leg. I go to gym four times weekly but cannot face exercise with leg restrictions, so I never wear the compression garment at gym. Doesn't seem to be a problem.
Are you sure you should be using treadmill? My physiotherapist counselled to avoid "high impact" exercise, so I focus on rower and exercise bike for my cardio exercise.
Whatever- keep going to the gym!
Hello bigcalf thank you for your reply I think it alright as long as it's fash walking as one foot stays one the ground. When running both feet are of the ground for a split second which has more impact on the knee etc. That is good that you manage the gym everyday also I quite like the rowing machine but it gives me a sore back. Hope you have a good day today the β is out in scotland and the autumn leaves are shining in the wind xoxo
This is not a technical answer but the principles are correct. Wearing compression when exercising is really good for helpng manage lymphoedema. The garment acts as a elastic barrier for the lymph to push against while you exercise. This aids the flow of lymph fluid and helps manage/ improve swelling. I didn't wear my compression garments (legs) for years while exercising (line dancing). Didn't see the need as ok without. Once a nurse explained "why" I started to wear them and do feel a difference.
Thank you AnnBury that's a great explanation I to had a great pair of boots what I used to do everything in and didn't feel the knee to wear compression all the time but after that bout of cellulitis the left one know longer fits which is good news to my wee shoe mender as he's been re healing them for about 10years π. I now wear my tights everyday. Hope you are still managing the line dancing as it's good exercise. Have a fantastic weekend xoxo
