hello, My name is Faith. My dog Chester has to take theophylline ER 100 mg 3 times a day for breathing. he has had a breathing problem since he was very young. He also has heart disease. He has been on Theophylline since 2010. It has been very hard to find. for the last year i have had to have 200 mg and cut them in half but now i am unable to find 200 mg. does anyone know of an alternative to the theophylline as the Cardiologist vet that gave chester this medicine will not give me an alternative medicine unless chester comes and has another heart echo done and thats close to 900 with xrays and i do not have that kind of money nor do i have a reliable vehicle to get all the way to mnpls.

thank you for any help.

Hi Faith! My last little guy was on Theophylline for about a year before I lost him in September. We had to have it made at a compound pharmacy and we needed a prescription from our Vet. Do you have another Vet that could help you get some?

No. My pulmonary specialist stated back in 2016 that it has been phased out in the U.S. No pharmaceutical company is making any more. I've looked everywhere and the only alternative out there is THEO-24. It was no where near effective and very expensive! I've asked for a better alternative and was told by the specialist that none are out there for me. How sad! I guess if congressional actions/methods would happen, then maybe the companies would make it again.

It was phased out but the compound pharmacy should be able to make it for you.

Sorry. All I can suggest is to contact the drug company that provided the theophylline to you. Sometimes they give out inexpensive or free samples.. Good luck.
