I’m curious what everyone does to control their asthma/allergy symptoms? What mix of medications does everyone use, or natural remedies??? I noticed I am super sensitive to medicine now , ever since I had my anxiety get out of control and depressed since February which made me become house ridden and always feel sick now, I have had a lingering virus for almost two months now and it’s affecting my breathing everyday. Any and all answers are welcomed! Thanks

I take Breo as my controller- I like that it is once a day. Also I am on Allergy shots, nasal spray, Albuterol as needed. My asthma seems to do better in summer- so less meds.
Yoga helps me a lot as well- It's not always easy to "give myself" a few minutes a day to just focus on me but I try...🙂
Predisolone 40mg currently (aim is 10mg maintenance daily)
Beralizumab injection (1x month)
Fexofenadine 180mg (1-4x daily)
Avamys/dymista nasal spray (2spray daily)
Ranitidine 150mg (2x2 daily)
Acidex advance (10ml post meal)
Alendronic acid 70mg (1x weekly)
Cerelle 75mcg (1x daily)
Vitamin D 50,000u (1x week)
Erm... that really looks like a lot 🙈. But all to help asthma or to control triggers (or stop issues caused by steroids)
I also make sure to stay as active as I can, but also to try and give myself recovery time (which I’m very bad at) 😅. Also if I’m cold/flu/virus-y I usually take a mustard bath... very old school but helps without flaring asthma. Have tried nasal rinsing which helps but I really can’t stand it so only do it if I really have too.
For skin - moisturizer, Vit. C serum and E liquid.
Walk 20 - 40 minutes.
Strength/toning exercise 15 minutes.
Breathing exercises (from a VERY old book) 10 minutes.
No smoking, no alcohol.
Lots of spring water, spices, fruits, veggies.
Avoiding: yeast, high carb foods, heavily salted or processed foods, most dairy, artificial ingredients and sweeteners.
I am finally at a point in my life where I can take care of me. It's alot to consider, but my long-term goal is to be rid of asthma. Lofty, eh? And the doc thinks I'm foolish. But the way I see it, I did just fine without asthma for my first 20 years, why not for my last 20 (or more!)?
Wishing you the best as you discover what helps, and what doesn't, for you.
I appreciate what you are doing. I am on the similar path. Stopped all meds and on a near Paleo diet with some cheating down 25 lbs which means I can get up the hill from the beach without stopping. Counter is full of supplements. Core ones are Ocupower Mutivitamin, extra Lutein, CoQ10, Fish oil, Astragalus, probiotic, powdered magnesium citrate, and extra liquid vit d and b12 when I remember. Occasional Buckwheat honey for cough, Elderberry syrup and rescue inhaler. Dropped a few others as had to simplify. Also Citirizine as was reported in clinical paper to dilate the Bronchial tubes as well as an Albuterol inhaler so take daily. Lots better but still occasions feel chest tightness, cough yellow mucus and have shortness of breath really exert my self. Also no booze, no smoking occasional Mary Wanna edibles. Its legal here in Oregon. Was diagnosed at age 78 but had problems for a decade just not diagnosed.
I use elderberry, too, as a preventive during winter. Which reminds me, I also take homeopathic Influenzinum every two weeks October til April. I have absolutely no proof that it works, and realize that others may consider it (and other homeopathics) a scam, but I cannot take a flu shot, and I don't get the flu. If it only acts as a placebo, it's worth it to me. I don't think I've ever heard of Buckwheat honey, so will need to check it out, along with Citirizine. Would love to drop the Dulera, but with it my peak flow is 350, without it it's 250. It's amazing how my body has adapted to the lowered lung function over the years (not that I'd recommend asthma to others!). It sounds like we're of a similar mind -- trying to work with our bodies to regain lung health. My doc would like it if I were on more meds, but she knows I am a "bad patient," lol. Keep up the healthy lifestyle and keep the faith!
The trade name for cetirizine world wide is Zytrex. Was the only non drowsy antihistamine that worked for me 20 years ago. I was not using it lately until I read the clinical paper about it dilating the bronchial tubes. Glory Bee is the US brand of buckwheat honey and some posted somewhere that it was as good as dextromethorphan the only Over the Counter cough preparation the sell here. Do not have proper health care here as I live in a shore side resort area. Plus a lot of sick people much sicker than I here. I live in a state where all the good docs are in the main city, Portland Oregon. 4 hr drive away. I need to follow up on the saltwater neti pot. I need that. I am getting better so will keep on the program. I really want a bottle of those Placebos!
Thanks for the info! My experience has taught me to never stop looking for one's personal solution, and that our own research can be as helpful as a medical practitioner, especially when the latter is so far away. Be well!
I neglected to say that I also have a rescue inhaler on hand, Pro-Air, plus Azelastine (nasal spray). It's rare that I need either, but when I get a cold or a respiratory bug, they sure comes in handy. Lastly, I use a saline solution in a neti pot to keep the crud at bay.
I'm in Minnesota, US. I take Singulair, Cetrizine, and Flonase nasal spray. I use an Air Duo Respi click as a maintenance inhaler, Albuter as a rescue and always keep Albuterol and duo neb solution on hand.
How long have you been taking all of this? I used to take singular but it stopped working for me like 3 years ago, so stopped taking. I wonder if I start it now it will work again? Citrizine has made me too drowsy so I can’t seem to take those I’m sensitive to medication so it’s been hard to find what works for me
I have taken these for quite a few years. I only use the Flonase when I have a cold or my allergies are acting up. I have a very high tolerance to drugs I can take anything! So, have you tried cutting the Cetrizine in half? What are you able to take? Do you have inhalers? Did you know that stress and anxiety can contribute the breathing problems. Please work with your doctor to find the right meds for you, sometimes it takes a while to find the right combination. BTW I take Bupropion and Sertraline for anxiety & depression with Alprazolam for back up when I need it.
I'll keep checking here in case you have any more questions. Take Care of Yourself!
I tried zyrtec, think I was allergic to it. Made my chest itchy on the inside. The chronic Rhinitis is getting on my nerves since I also hav bronchiectasis so that makes it double the sludge.
