Really worried about starting CBT!..

So last week my CPN sent a refferal for me to have CBT... I'm so worried and nervous. I'm still waiting for a appointment and I know I could be waiting awhile but it's really stressing me out already.

Have any of you had CBT? Can anyone tell be about it and what to expect?

I think I'm more worried of how the therapist will be with me and I don't want him/her to think I'm a nutcase:(

Thanks. Xxx

Hi

They wont think you are nuts ...this is their job & they see all different kinds of people with different kinds of problems & nothing you say they wont have heard before , so please try to get that idea out of your head because what you need to do to get the best from this kind of therapy is to be as open & as honest as you can so they can then asses which will be the best kind of therapy to help you :-)

Years ago when I once tried it I was to afraid to say all what went of in my mind thinking they would think I was nuts & maybe lock me up & throw the key away but by holding back I did not get the best from it , this time I let everything out & it has been so much more beneficial as they know which way to go with me

Usually they will ask you a little bit about yourself & from there the conversation just seems to flow & at the end they will normally make suggestions in what way they think will help you most , don't be afraid to suggest something else they mention if you think that will help you more than they suggest , they are there to work with you & get the most positive result :-)

Remember they have been trained & this is their job , they are not there to judge but to keep their good reputation to get positive results :-)

Good Luck

Love

Hi,

Don't beat yourself up about this, I found CBT very helpful, I have done a stress course also.

I have met 3 therapists who have helped me a great deal, two were through Anxiety U.K. and the other from N.H.S.

They provide you with a thought diary, where you can write down your emotions, physical sensations, unhelpful thoughts, etc. which I find very helpful.

They are good at their jobs and never judge you. I found the first appointment quite gruelling because you don't know what to expect, and they say you have to feel worse to get better, if that makes sense. i.e. you are baring all the anxieties where before you held them close to your chest.

I hope this helps. xx
