So last week I was asking about almond flour and if it was different to ground almonds. I managed to buy some in Holland & Barrett and it is like ground almonds that have been dried. I wanted it to make 'Fathead pizza' - a recipe I found in the Diet Doctor. I made the pizza tonight. I didn't know what it meant by Italian sausage as the recipe required, but I just sliced some chorizo instead. It was really tasty. The pizza base was softer - a bit like a scone base which I have had elsewhere in the past. Will definitely make it again though. It also suggested plastering it with garlic butter - will definitely try that too!! I made enough for two but couldn't eat all of my portion so have saved some for lunch tomorrow. Must look for more recipes using almond flour - it did feel like I was having a bread product even though there are less than 5g carb in 100g flour - didn't check fibre. Give it a go
Fathead pizza: So last week I was... - Low-Carb High-Fat...
Fathead pizza
I use almond flour to make Keto bread
Brilliant. Bought a sack of almond flour at costco today on a bit of a leap of faith. Will make pizza for the family at the weekend.
Great - hope you all enjoy it. Make extra pizza bases and chuck a load of garlic butter on - yummm
Thanks. Will consider...no, not for me. I haven't yet abandoned wheat from my life. I am still mourning the home grown sour dough starter I accidentally assassinated a year ago.
Italian sausage, I learnt from a YouTube video, is an American thing. It's sausage as in sausage-and-mash, but with Italian seasoning. It's not something you would find in the UK or Italy.
It's a pizza, top howsoever you like!
Yes I thought it must be something like that.
My son has tried to make a sour dough starter many times without success. Then he ordered some online - from somewhere in Hampshire I think. Perhaps you could try there- I can get the website from him for you if you want.
I do miss bread, especially the gorgeous freshly made bread from the local bakery including sourdough. That's why I was so chuffed with this pizza base - it felt like I was having bread
Thanks. I don't need anything wheat based at the moment.
But I was able to grow a great sour dough from the air. I killed it by taking it to a cottage holiday, and baked it into a loaf. I was under the impression I had left some of the starter in the fridge, but when I got home, I found the clean jar by the sink; I obviously intended to bring some of the starter home , but forgot that and killed it in an Aga.
I probably won't grow another one, as I won't be eating wheat often enough to justify the effort.
Oh! A moment of mourning for a lost craft.
Hi there
Marks & Spencer's sell Italian sausages. I bought some 2 weeks ago from my local branch. My son loved them but to my mind they are nothing like the ones I ate years ago from an Italian deli. They were nice though.
Ah, but they probably aren't what the recipe was a suggesting. Italian sausage is a very specific food invented in America. I would hope that if M&S were selling an Italian sausage, they got the recipe from Italians not Americans.
ChubbieChops make sure you check the carb content of your sausages. I was shocked to find the main contributor to the high carb of a sausage casserole I made was the sausages themselves.
Oh poo, I forgot to go into Mark's when I was in town yesterday. I check everything for carbs these days. I actually found a really nice chorizo in Waitrose - only 4 ingredients it said - pork, paprika, salt and garlic. I know chorizo isn't Italian but it tasted good. Chorizo de Leon if you're interested. And only 1g carb per 100g. Perfect
May be a stupid question, but did it actually taste of almonds? I couldn't force down a pizza that tastes like a bakewell tart with cheese and tomato on it 😂
No it doesn't taste like almonds, it's just like flour.... I make fritters and use it as a bit of a binder, eggs, grated cheese and whatever I've got left over in the fridge
I tasted the flour!! out of interest and that did taste a bit almondish, but by the time it was mixed with the cheese, an egg and a little white wine vinegar as per the recipe, it didn't taste anything like a Bakewell tart!
I use it to make little biscuits, add an egg and melted butter. Goes well with cheese.
This sounds yummy, I will definitely give it a go! Thanks for sharing
