I try to treat conspiracy theories and tinfoil-hat positions with a bit of skepticism, but it's hard not to draw the conclusion that Big Ag has a lot of influence on dietary policy. They all have seats on government advisory panels (in the UK as well as the US) and there's no doubt that the ongoing policies benefit them enormously. Corn, soy, vegetable oils, and their derived "foods" are enormous moneyspinners. They can take cheap commodities and turn them into very profitable junk food ... which is endorsed by governments as being "healthy".
Aside from animal fat, coconut oil and various types of palm oil have for millennia been the fats of choice for half of the planet's human population, much as olive oil is/was the fat of choice in the Mediterranean. All these plants are easy to grow, the fruits are easy to express oil from without complicated technology, and the result tastes nice. It'd be a bit of a surprise if something that humans have eaten for 100,000 years without any apparent problems turned out to be poison, while synthetic alternatives that humans have never eaten turned out to be uber-healthy.
"But the big surprise was the coconut oil. Not only was there no rise in LDL levels, which was what we were expecting, but there was a particularly large rise in HDL, the "good" cholesterol, up by 15%"
I asked Prof Khaw, who was clearly surprised by these results, why she thought it had happened.
"I have no real idea," she candidly replied. "Perhaps it is because the main saturated fat in coconut oil is lauric acid and lauric acid may have different biological impacts on blood lipids to other fatty acids."
Well, quite. There's no "may" about it. It's been known for many, many years that fat metabolism is immensely more complicated than "saturated fats increase cholesterol and unsaturated fats don't". Each type of fatty acid goes through a slightly different chain of reactions and produces slightly different changes in biochemical markers.
The fact that this is so implies what has also been known for a good while: cholesterol measurements are a completely useless predictor of future CVD risk.
I absolutely love this guy. That video was amazing. I only changed my eating habbits 7 days ago but im now in the mind set if it isnt natural then im not eating it. Nature provides the planet with all that we need to survive healthily. Id take natural oils all day long. Besides by being heathier on lchf we are proving all those "professional's" wrong anyway.
