My son is today one year post BMT. Unfortunately his platelets count has remained low, 13: Way too low.
However, he has to go from Canada to the USA, and I think it's important he a travel insuranse, in case he needs a transfusion while in the States.
His doctor wants him to get a platelet transfusion the day before his trip.
I have spent 3 full days looking for an insurance company, still unsuccessfully. The stability period excludes my son having a platelet transfusion the day before his trip.
May be someone in this site can help? I thank you for all advise I can get.

Travel insurance generally doesn’t include medical coverage, why is your son coming to USA? Did he have a BMT or stem cell transplant? Have you considered Nplate, I’ve been on it since 2010 to maintain my platelets over 50K
I worked in a BMT unit in the in the mid 1990’s and did not have any patients with a partial engagement; does your son have other medical conditions that might account for the low platelets?
Sorry for all the questions, I’m just trying to understand why the BMT was only partly successful. Be well
Hi Kyriak51. Sorry it took so long to reply to your post. The fact is that the BMT had to be done urgently and there was no time to find a full match. My other son was the giver and it's a half match.
Hi, I'm a Canuck living in the US, and have been researching the same question in reverse. I would call OHIP or whatever provincial insurance you have, and ask them what they recommend. Good luck!
I finally found a Canadian insurance company that requests no stability period whatsoever. It's called "Clear Compare", they are based in downtown Toronto. After reading the policy, I am not sure how much we can count on them in case we really need them... I have not used them as yet, did not need to, so far.
