Hi all, so I wrote on this forum 22 days ago when my dad was rushed in for emergency surgery with a ruptured oesophagus. He had been in an induced coma for 17 days but his kidneys failed, developed sepsis, lungs like leather and basically no Hope at all, 24 to 48 hours they said. He was put on a kidneys filter and it worked!. For 2 days he was starting to nod a little and seemed to know we were there, unfortunately after coming off filter they have failed again and been put back on it. Is this common for kidneys to fail again days after coming off it, so worried and we are all just living a nightmare. Any body been through anything like this with a hope to recovery would be appreciated. My dad is almost 73. Thank you. X
Kidneys failed again: Hi all, so I wrote on this... - ICUsteps
Kidneys failed again
Hi Tillyfloss2010 - I was on dialysis for 7wks because of all the complications you mention above ( except ruptured oesophagus) - the team weren’t sure if my kidneys would ever work properly again - they are fine. It is quite usual for organs to fail - look like there is improvement - only for it to look hopeless again. After about 6wks of coma it looked like I’d be transferred for ECMO - which never happened- at that point I was deemed too ill - no chance of survival and therefore would be a waste of resources.
Thank you for your reply, yes on looking at other comments it does give me hope. When it all happens I, my family and the senior consultants said he had very , very little chance of survival, we prepared ourselves for the inevitable, its a roller coaster of ups and massive downs which I am sure everybody on this forum will understand. I am happy you survived and pulled through, do u have any long term effects from your illness pls? Don't feel like my dad will ever be the same if he recovers which is horrible to say, but at the moment it's how I feel x
I couldn’t do anything or myself after ICU 5yrs ago, today I am starting a 34.5 mile walk for charity - granted - I am not the same as I was but not all change is bad
Organ failure is not uncommon I’m 73 my family were called in twice because I wasn’t expected to make it. I had tubes everywhere including 4 drains in my lungs. Things have changed and I’m not the same my humour has moved from being wicked to evil, my brain doesn’t control my mouth etc it takes time for both patients and relatives to recover from the trauma no matter what the out come
Hi. My kidneys failed when I had an infection and sepsis. I was given a tranfusion twice. My kidneys recovered but are permanently damaged and I have ckd stage 3b. My understanding is my kidneys wont recover and am lucky the treatment restored some function. I have a blood test at least once a month to check the gfr.
Hello yes we also experienced this in my brother’s situation. He was put back on the filter quite a few times as he got new infections and his kidneys weren’t working. We were told by medical staff that the kidneys will be the last thing to recover and that is what we experienced. I hope your Dad makes some progress with his recovery. I do know that rollercoaster very well as we were on it when my brother was in critical and acute intensive care for over 2 months. He went into make a good recovery. I hope your Dad does too.
