My husband has been in icu for 28days now, since 12th of January due to covid, was sedated and on ventilator, after 7 days he had tracheostomy, planning to wean him off he wasn't tolerating. Few days after had infection and then sepsis, then he deteriorated. For more than 5 days now has ben on 95-100% oxygen, been called in 2 times, today was the 3rd time, saying he is not responding to any thing, as his blood pressure is going down even if he is on medication to bring it up.

Was told they will have to make a decision within 24hours for his best interest.

N.b. he has been on daily dialysis, lungs stiff, on BP med. for low BP, PEEP 16, Fi02 100%, saturation 90%. B.P 79/49

Has anyone been in this situation Please ?

Yes. I was on dialysis for 7wks, I was proned, I was intubated for 57 days, trachy for 14 days. Low BP, highest setting for O2 - they revived me numerous times, restarted my heart, kept me alive on an ambu bag because I couldn’t tolerate intubation. It was as desperate as desperate gets. It is possible for a person to survive from the very edge of life / my family can testify to that. They said good bye to me on numerous occasions but I refused to die.

I was in ICU with sepsis for 9 weeks, most of them in a coma, and my wife was told to expect the worst on several occasions. That was 5 years ago. Hang in there, and good luck.

My mother was as well. She’s been on vent since 12/7/20 and had trach on 12/31. In mid January she went septic and her bp dropped and was in coma due to her liver and kidneys shutting down. We got called to come in and say bye. They changed her antibiotics and had her on bp meds and dialysis. Since then her liver went back to normal and her kidneys are making their own urine again and went down on the number of times she needed dialysis. Her vent setting improved to the point she was doing c pap mode and FiO2 down to 25-30%. She’s been awake for 3 weeks now but fully awake and communicating two weeks but as she wakes up more she has become more anxious and tells the nurses she feels shortness of breath and some pain from time to time. She’s having a hard time sleeping and still has good and bad days.

There is still hope for things to improve. Try to see if they can move his position in bed. Sometimes it helps. They changed the angle of the bed this morning and it helped with her breathing.
