dad on ventilator 2+ months

My dad has been on a ventilator since the end of March after getting Covid. He has pulmonary fibrosis, so the doctors think there's no chance of a recovery after all of the additional damage and scarring of his lungs, and they've told us to consider palliative car. But we just aren't ready to give up. We have been in agony wondering whether we're causing our dad unnecessary suffering, but we also want to know for sure that there's no hope before we would decide that it's over. His other organs have been fine, it's just his lungs and maybe his brain (although the doctors can't give us a straight answer as to why he would be brain damaged. He hasn't had prolonged lack of oxygen or blood pressure. CT scans all normal. EEG was abnormal, but not indicative of anything specific?) Basically they think his lungs are too scarred to ever recover. He's been lying in a bed for 2 months without any physical therapy and very minimal human interaction because of Covid guidelines..how can they say that he is beyond recovery when he is so deconditioned? He had scarring on his lungs prior to this virus, but he was extremely physically fit. He didn't require supplemental oxygen and he would skip rope for long periods of time as his exercise.

I guess I'm wondering..has anyone ever come off the ventilator with fibrotic lungs?

Please no negative comments! I know the reality of his chances of living.

I had severe ARDS after everything else - its nickname is ‘concrete lung’ - they thought that there was very little chance of my survival ( in fact no chance on occasion) - or having my lungs back after - I’d had hypoxia so my wife wasn’t sure if I’d be brain damaged too. I’m here, minimal scarring and survived a pleural effusion last year.
