My mother was admitted into the ICU. today is day 5 due to an phumonia that took over her lungs. Turned out that she had caught the H1N1 swine flu virus. They had to medically sedate her into a coma. She is depending on this machine to breath 100% But they have lowered the pure oxygen to %67 the other percent of oxygen is on her own and she is still at %100. So that's a step in the right direction. The paralyzed medication that she is receiving is now effecting her kidneys. All of vitals are good so far. She is in a rotating bed that helps drain her lungs, but the phumonia is still there but has now dried up, it hasn't gotten worse but it hasn't improved. Is there anyone out there that has been in this similar situation?

Medically induced coma due to phumonia.
Hello Yellow 023, I amassuming that you are not British as I am, I was in ICU for nearly 3 weeks, sepsis, multi organ failure, kidneys, dyalasis, pneumonia twice ended up with a tracheostomy for over 2 months and a cardiac arrest which obviously I survived, the sedative drugs gave me terrible hallucinations which I will never forget, I learned to walk, talk and eat again and am now enjoying life, it is difficult but it can be done, you need determination don't be beaten by anything, good luck to you, and as we Scots say, 'awe the best ' Garry 2017
I am also from the UK. Thinking of your Mum and all of you. This happened to my family too. My younger brother was placed in a coma due to sepsis from flu. All his organs were failing. He was on ECMO. It took him a month to start to wake up. It was exactly a year today that he started to wake up. It was such a wonderful day for us. The best advice we were given is remain hopeful. Like Garry he had to relearn to swallow speak and walk. Today he is taking his young son out🙂. Please be reassured it is possible to recover from this. The Doctors and nurses told us kidneys will be the last organ to start working again and that was true. My brother was on dialysis in ICU as well as ECMO and a ventilator. You are in our thoughts. With best wishes.
Hi Yellow023 we have not experience the same situation as you, but I can share my story to give you hope and faith to help you deal with current situation. Up to this date my father has spent 38 days at ICU following cardiac arrest and we had some very dark times during this period. He has had 2 pneumonias, urinal infection, was intubated for about 30 days, a blood clot, temporary multiple organ failure, 2 bad hospital bacterias and a surgery to fix his ribs (were broken during CPR) and stabilize his chest. Despite the bad prognosis from doctors, he has proven them wrong and showed them he would like to beat the odds. He is still in serious condition but is fighting day by day.
He was initially cooled off, then put in medically induced coma and became conscious at the end of the year. Since then he was intubated 2 more times because his ribs and chest were giving him problems with breathing. Each pneumonia and bacteria made him very weak and for days almost unconscious. They told us to be prepared for the worst but he kept on fighting. Last 10 days were the best so far with him being awake, responding more to our questions (nodding/blinking) but he still needed help with breathing. His surgery was on Thursday and yesterday they removed his tubus. When we visited him yesterday, he started talking normally like nothing happened.
He still has CRE, multiple organs recovering slowly and a blood clot but he is able to talk to us, which means the world to me. Last 38 days were hell for our family but support from my friends and stories shared from people on this website help me deal with it better.
I am sending positive thoughts your way and wish you and your family all the best during this tough times.
Hi hope your mum is on the mend. Yes I had double pneumonia, flu then sepsis, renal failure etc. I was in a coma for over a month, petrifying times, you can hear what people are saying so please talk to her as the delerium is horrendous. Hugs x
Yes I have! Was in induced coma for 12 days. Keep talking to her she can hear you. All I remember is Voices of loved ones and feeling I was on a fairground ride. 8 weeks later I am well on the way to recovery. Keep praying and talking to her. Hope this helps you at such a stressful time. It's harder on the loved ones looking in than the patient. X
