Post sepsis
Hi Rachelm1
Hair loss is common - have a look at ICUsteps Critical Care guide & this article is very comprehensive too
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
Mine came out in handfuls about 8weeks after initial trauma. I was advised to brush my hair since it would stimulate growth, that is scary.
I took multivitamins & minerals. I think potassium & vitamin D&B were good for hair ( check this out - my memory isn’t always to be trusted). Recovery takes time - be patient with yourself.
I had sepsis last December and January and about 3 months after my super thick hair began falling out to the point I lost about half of the thickness. I cleaned my brush every day to keep up with how much I was losing and after about another 8 weeks it slowed down and finally quit. My hairdresser told me I had new hair coming in all over my head, some in thick patches. It's about an inch and a half now so six months after the sepsis the loss and regrowth is happening. I am taking a vitamin with biotin, keratin and B complex also and using keratin hair products. My nails were also crumbly but have just about grown out again. I lost 30 pounds, fat but also a lot of muscle. I haven't gained any of it back yet since I had a colostomy then a reversal and a lot of diarrhea to this day but my husband is on a mission to fatten up both me and the dog. The dog is responding nicely. LOL.
This is what I'm using for my hair and I buy it on Amazon: HAIRFLUENCE - Hair Growth Formula For Longer, Stronger, Healthier Hair - Scientifically Formulated with Biotin, Keratin, Bamboo & More! - For All Hair
I had a lot of frustration with my hair too after time in icu. I ended up cutting it extremely short. It grew back fine and healthy once I started eating well again. I felt worried too when these strange things happened. Give yourself time and talk to your dr or nurse. I am sure as you get stronger, your hair will grown back stronger than ever.
I wish i could say something to make you feel better. My hair loss started about 8 weeks after septic shock. I have lost about 1/2 of my hair at this point and it has been devestating. I think it helps to know you are not alone and this will pass. I found a couple hairstyles I can live with for now and looked at is as part of the healing process realizing it's okay to cry...i wish i could say more to help!
