flu symptoms with aps / stroke history

it’s my first time getting flu since my stroke a year ago.

As an aps (and stroke) patient from my understanding of the condition, I am not immunosuppressed. But my flu whilst I haven’t had high fevers. I have felt my original stroke side effects come back - eg vestibular dizziness and it’s made the whole flu feel a lot scarier than I would have previously felt about getting the flu.

Does anyone have any experience or can they shed some light if this is linked?

Please go and see your doctor. If you have any symptoms, no matter what they are, you should see your doctor for advice, given your medical history. Please don’t leave it.

With good wishes,

Ros

My wife has aps not me but I had a stroke 2 years ago and if I get a cold or flu it brings the stroke symptoms back on my left side. You should check with a doctor to be safe but try not to panic. My wife also had a stroke in 2013 and she has similar problems when she is unwell.

that’s helpful to know, finally seeing the end of the flu, and all symptoms have subsided.

Yes a bad flu can bring the symptoms of condition e g STROKE and APS as the immune is under attack.

APS is an AUTOIMMUNE condition not immunosuppressed. ( e g taking anti rejection transplant drugs or on chemo ) Suggest you google to understand the difference .

Example ;

If immunosuppressed ( or over 75 ) you can have the bi (2) per year, Covid vaccination boosters .

Being autoimmune does NOT qualify you for 2 covid boosters per year , only 1 the same as under 75 year olds .

If on blood thinners which some APS or stroke patients ( you don’t mention) this protects you with a bad flu attack from clots ) ( An APS occurrence for some ) .

hi. Are you on warfarin? If so please check your INR. If your INR drops too far, it is possible to start getting some APS symptoms back.

Catching the flu revs up our already-hyper responsive immune systems in order to fight the virus. This can alter the effectiveness of APS meds. So do consult with your doctor!

I do agree with lupus-support1 , any new symptom or old ones coming back needs a trip to the GP or consultant. I have noticed when I am ill with infection, (recently the case), or with a nasty bug, things like old injuries and scars hurt? Really strange. MaryF

I spoke to my doctors and they said it’s a common medical phenomenon, almost like a muscle memory.

It’s really frustrating as I feel dizzy all the time and just tired of it!

Thanks for all your replies
