Hi guys and gals

Has anyone experienced vertigo with APS . Had it on and off recently, really weird , dizzy when sitting up , looking up and getting dizzy but the worst is getting out of my car when on the drive , it feels like it is still moving.

I mentioned it to my GP and she said check your BP !!

Hi, I have had incidents of it in the past, but okay currently, obviously if this is something new you need to go and see your GP asap, and try and bring your next appointment forward if possible with your main consultant, some find with their INR at a better range this can settle down, but there can be other reasons.

1. n.neurology.org/content/84/...

2. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/227...

Thanks Mary , I have had it on and off since I first started with APS, for some strange reason it has kicked in again . I will give my consultant a call x

Well hopefully they will get to the bottom of it, your Hughes Syndrome/APS, or another reason. I hope you have a beneficial appointment. MaryF

Yes I've had lots of episodes of vertigo, often they have been a precursor to other clotting events, so vertigo should be taken seriously.

It happens when my INR is too low, or when I'm in a flare up but I also experience vertigo, or the sensation of being suddenly pushed sideways, or suddenly falling sideways even though I've not moved, when my INR has gone too high. I'm assuming that it's because I've made some micro clots when my INR was too low and now my INR has gone a bit too high, the clots are being shifted around in my body. 🤔

I have had vertigo while at rest, when lying down and if I have the sensation of falling while being mobile, then I actually end up falling sideways, usually to the right for some reason and obviously it's led to a few falls and nasty stumbles! 😯

I believe it can happen due to the lack of blood flow to the brain and also lack of blood flow to the balance area of our ears, due to sticky blood and/or micro clots.

I would definitely advise against driving if you're having bouts of vertigo, it could be extremely dangerous. I'm hoping you were travelling as a passenger in your car when you got out and experienced vertigo🤞 😱.

I didn't know that vertigo could be caused by the BP but as you have APS, your GP should be considering that your symptoms could be caused by your APS and therefore should be taking your symptoms seriously.

Hope that helps, Claire xxx

I’ve experienced this too. Sometimes standing I feel almost like I was on a boat and it’s still moving. It’s a weird phenomenon. I also have bouts of vertigo ranging from just enough to make me queasy to not wanting to look up at all.

I do not know what medication would help this though. Sounds like you need to share this with your GP to rule out things and see if anything can help

Yes, I have various forms.

It tens to be worse with initial laying down or getting up from a reclining positions, or turning on my side in my sleep. ( I will dream that I’m somehow spinning- then wake up queasy/ sick.)

I may go for a couple of three months just fine- then have a month of trouble.

That’s exactly how I am kelly . Turn over in bed and it’s like my head suddenly decides to catch up with my body x

I too suffer from vertigo. Even to the extent looking at a patterned carpet or driving through trees where the sun light is flickering through can make me dizzy as well as the scenarios you have mentioned. My gp put me on betahistine and my consultant put me stematil . between the two they have helped but haven't stopped it. I was advised to stop driving which was awful and took away my independence.

When my INR is low my dizziness is worse too. it comes on at the most strangest times and for the most peculiar reasons, like laying in bed with my eyes shut and my whole body lurches, it's so nauseating at times.

Ask your gp for medication to help it, it won't cure it but it does make a huge difference.

O god yeah flickering light 🤢it’s awful , even when on tv drives me mad

KellyInTexas profile image

Yep...it’s awful.

Have you had your optic nerves checked? I’m just curious if you could also have this as well as the vertigo issue? Are your discs ok? Make sure you’re not thinning nerves or having disc pallor. It doesn’t have anything to do with vertigo, but makes the disorientation worse. If you are having micro clotting- make sure your vision is not being affected.

Yes- I have a lot of trouble wit flickering leaves.

Have your optic nerves checked, just as a precaution.

Also ask about temporal lobe epilepsy, just as a precaution. ( mention to your doctor about the trees when driving. This is a strobing light trigger, actually.)

Are you currently taking blood thinners? If so, have you recently had your INR checked? Before I was diagnosed with APS, I had moments that could only describe as room spins. Unfortunately, I wasn’t diagnosed with APS until after I suffered a significant stroke. Post stroke, taking Blood thinners t

achieve a therapeutic INR level. Since I began taking blood thinners these episodes of room spins have ceased.

My nephew was diagnosed APS in 2015, after he had 3 straight days of nonstop Vertigo. A MRI showed 2 old small strokes and a brain tumor. (DR ordered MRI because they thought he had a bad sinus infection). He has suffered with Vertigo on and off ever since. But, interestingly as you described his happens mostly when getting out of the car. I am so grateful you asked this question, as he sees his Primary Doctor this Friday and I will do some research on things mentioned here. His DRs have also said the location of his benign brain tumor could be causing it, but I think it is more likely related to APS.

Been to my GP , he has done lots of silly tests on me and yes it’s vertigo . Start medication tonight 🎉🎉🎉🎉

May I ask what medication your DR has prescribed for Vertigo?

Hydrochloride tablets

How are you doing since starting the Hydrochloride tablets? I had to look it up, sounds like it is an Antihistamine. Has it helped with your Vertigo?

amy1808 profile image
amy1808 in reply tokiminabmw

To be honest it has helped, they do give me nausea though

Glad it has helped, but that stinks that it gives you nausea.

I had a terrible episode of vertigo once in the past that lasted for a few days. I was on vacation to Vegas. I’m from Long Island. When I got off the plane I started to feel a little weird, but when I got off the elevator at the hotel I remember I stepped off and I could hardly walk straight. The elevator shot up sooo fast I was just out of sorts. Personally I felt like it was the change in elevation and probably the plane ride, I hadn’t been on a plane in well over 10 years. At least not since I had been diagnosed with APS.. it ended up ruining my vacation though because I could hardly leave hotel room I was just so dizzy for the next few days. Since then I’ve only had one or two short bouts of vertigo. I’ve taken motion sickness pills to help with it..
