Juice Fast Fad

Has anyone here experimented with a "Juice fast" for weight control? My bride and I just watched a video entitled " Fat. Sick and Nearly dead." It was produced by an Auzzie and recounted success in loosing substantial weight in addition to loosing the need for many prescription drugs. All the skinny kids here in this side of the pond are smitten with pummeling vegetables and enduring this diet. APS was never mentioned but he did have a different debilitating auto-immune disease which disappeared after he shed 50 pounds I don't know what that equates to in Stones or Rocks. But he did, however, discuss his weight loss in equivalent bowling balls! Six, I think. Have bowling balls become the international standard of measurement?

He emphasized being under a doctors care and I can't imagine my Medic approving or working with me on this plan. There was a lot of discussion of kale and other green unmentionables. Does anyone have any personal experience with juicing as a temporary diet plan?

Only in as much as I've juiced several times in the past to kick start losing weight before being diagnosed with Aps 5 years ago. It works if you stick to it just like most diets. I did it again a few years back with the knowledge of the effects of green vegetables on Inr and monitored it carefully by self testing and I kept kale to a minimum because I detest the stuff although adding lemon including the rind makes it palatable. Would I do it again? Yes definitely. I did inform my GP who is generally very supportive but he was horrified, and gave me all the usual warnings, I can't imagine Doctors being very supportive tbh but hey what they know about Aps is minimal. Although it's better to keep an eye on your food intake and not need to diet but hey we all know that right. I could do with losing a bit of weight now but I can't exercise due to the pain, waiting for both knees to be replaced. I miss exercising, swimming was one of my great pleasures and I even enjoyed the gym but I simply can't do it.

Thanks for your insights. Sorry to hear about the knee limitation. It always seems to be something. I've decided to keep pushing on in whatever way I can. The limitations grow but so does my determination.

Nice to see you on here :) By the way I love that you refer to your other half as your "bride" my amazing husband also refers to me as his "bride" and I must add that it does a gals heart good to hear her lovingly being called this. So cheers to you and your bride.

Ok so down to business as per the "juicing" SOOOOO much to read about and always always need of doc's approval before starting of course. From my own personal experience, I juice consistently it is a way of life for me now and when I stray from it I see a dramatic difference. What you juice and your blood is where it gets so terribly tangled up and will actually become a part time job for you so it is not for the faint of heart. As you know with the blood disease high K is a clotter to us on blood thinners...and once you juice it and drink it down it goes straight to your blood stream. Thus I stay clear of Kale, I have come to think of Kale and ice cream as a rare treat that I may have a tiny bit of only if my blood INR is high and only once in a blue moon.

Every day I begin my morning regime with juicing fresh ginger and lemon, the whole lemon peel and all. I drink that in a shot glass to kill the bad bacteria in my tummy which we now know is a trigger for APS symptoms. So gut bacteria is a key thing to focus on. I add cayenne pepper to it also and will sometimes add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.

Juicing fills you up right away and our blood needs constant hydration more than most people the hydration is tremendously key. I can not emphasize enough on gut bacteria/health and hydration. All of which help with weight management also. What I stand on is consistency, organic and anti inflammatory veggies and fruit. I have a new favorite juice that I make each week now, it has helped with hydration and it is simple...watermelon cut up in a blender, add clean healthy water to it and a yummy apple peel and all. IT is a wonderful treat and feels like your body is thanking you as it goes down.

Also if you are not drinking a few table spoons of apple cider vinegar in warm water with a dash of lemon and honey each morning...you simply must. It does such wonderful things to that nasty chronic inflammation that we deal with. Read all about apple cider vinegar ok. Google the health benefits it truly is a cherished age old key.

I know you can do this brother...I'm praying for you. God's natural resources hold so many key pieces to better health. Just embrace it and have fun with it. A new adventure awaits! Big hugs your way...

A technical question Becca:

What juicer did you buy? I am old enough to remember Jack LaLanne on black and white TV and am leaning to his juicer. My mom would don her grey sweats every morning, grab a kitchen chair and that threra-band tool he sold and then work out with Jack.

On his 80th birthday he swam the "unswimable" channel from Alcatraz Island to the California mainland. But he had his hands tied behind his back leaving only his feet for propulsion! And he was harnessed with a string of 80 (for his birthday) adults in skiffs which he towed behind him. They built the prison on that rock so the inmates couldn't swim away! How can you not be inspired!

I have juiced occasionally but not in a sustained manner as part of dietary changes. Due in large part to having my clotting controlled with warfarin which is a beast of a drug to get along with at the best of times. I have seen that documentary myself and do believe it did for him what he said it did.

Buts here's another thing I have become aware of recently. There are many suggesting that a lack of magnesium in the diet may influence blood clotting. Magnesium is very difficult to test for in blood as most of it is stored elsewhere in the body so to test for levels in the blood, you will most likely get a false result.

You may not be aware but many women on this forum have previously suffered from incredibly painful periods previously and before they were diagnosed with APS. There are suggestions that they may be lacking in magnesium.

And here's the point I am trying to make. Magnesium is what goes on to make plant chlorophyll. The thing that makes plants green. So maybe you could say green veg provides magnesium that so many are short of in the diet.

Magnesium influences so many different functions in the human body that to be lacking in it will potentially cause a huge number of side effects.

IF juicing raises levels of magnesium in the body, that may be one of the factors that help so many people.

But here's the doctor thing. Cos warfarin being such a temperamental beast makes the whole possibility of going completely alone difficult, even if you are lucky enough to have a doctor onside.

I found this enormously interesting when I saw it for the first time. I saw a posting about the similarities of iron and magnesium. The atomic structure of these two elements is almost identical. But one has iron as the central element and the other has magnesium. Human blood needs iron and plant blood or chlorophyll needs magnesium.

But maybe we need magnesium more than we realise and juicing may be a quick delivery system for that.

You can trust us Aussies....but 'Auzzies".;)........dunno about them! I'm a bit sceptical that while all these fads work short term-it's really your brain that needs training to keep up weight loss and maintain it.

Thanks! Got it. It truly is a matter of retrain our collective brains.

While in New Zealand I also learned the difference between a fruit and a citizen of NZ. And now I know about Aussies. But no on has told be how to convert a Kiwi or an Aussies' weight to stones.

We work in Kg's so 2.2lbs = 1Kg. 14Lbs = 1 Stone so 50Lbs = roughly 3.5 Stones. We haven't used Stones in quite a few years :) (maybe the Brits will catch up eventually!)

Also hope you found out how to differentiate between the bird as well as fruit-I believe the bird is a culinary delight along with our Cockatoo. You place them in a pot of boiling water with a rock. When the rock gets soft you chuck out the bird and eat the rock. Could also be a way of losing weight?

Aloha. ...very funny! I enjoyed reading all these posts....but I would like to add that a swim a day keeps the doctor away. And an apple would be a good idea, too.

I like Dr Goldner’s smoothies but I am on lovenox so I don’t have to worry about the vitamin k and I blend a bunch of kale into them. When made correctly they are delish and my body craves them. I mix about six cups of kale add whatever juice I want to cover it 3/4 of the way add 1/4 cup of flax seed for omega 3s and a frozen banana, then vitamix it (blender I use- expensive, but worth it) until it’s all blended I also add frozen fruit whatever inspires me for that day sometimes watermelon some times cherries, maybe strawberries it gives a frozen smoothie/palatable consistency. Oops I also like to add a washed unpeeled orange that I chop up before putting in blender. Peel sounds gross but it isn’t, I promise. Have a yummy day😋

I do, but only when really unwell and ill in bed and off my food, I am not on Warfarin so no INR to worry about, however my diet is gluten free, with 5 brazil nuts a day for the selenium I would had had from wholemeal bread etc, Mediterranean and fairly low GI, added to this is daily exercise. I do sometimes have a Kale smoothie, if somebody makes it for me, but not my favourite thing! MaryF
