Hi, is it just Hughes you want covered for or is there a few other things?

I have lupus and Hughes and my travel insurance with my bank (Barclays) account covers me, and it costs like £7 a month and lasts all year and worldwide. They just ask you a number of questions and that's it. I think you aren't tied in to those accounts too, so you can add them and take them off when you like.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply, yes it's just APS my daughter has. But she's had P.E 's think this is what is hiking the price up.Barclays came out at £170 for the 1 week trip. One of the most expensive.

Hi

Please don't call Barclays travel insurance that is a different company and will charge a fortune (I used to work for Barclays) . If you get a current account that has an the ability to add different benefits like mobile phone insurance and travel insurance which you pay monthly for. It's that travel insurance you need as that is not underwritten by Barclays but another company like aviva. They have fully covered me for a number of conditions including my APS without being charged more.

Have just checked and it is aviva who underwrites it and they are the ones who accepted mine. So if you have a Barclays account please try them.

Thanks for the info, think I've got travel insurance with my bank so I'll also give them a try, see if they cover pre-existing illnesses..

Thanks again 😊

I use Allianz and they are very reasonable.

I was recommended Freedom-who specialize in pre-conditions. Having had strokes & APS & SS, have used them for many years.

Hope she has now found a Specialist of APS and that she will now be well protected from getting another PE when flying. It depends also if it is a long-flight or only 3 - 4 hours.

She had last time she wrote here a therapeutic level of anticoagulation with Warfarin between an INR of 2.0 - 3.0. and had at that time a conflict between her Hematologist and Rheumatologist about her INR-levels.

Best wishes from Kerstin in Stockholm

Steer clear of "cheap" insurance or comparison sites - by the time you have put all the health conditions in they won't be cheap anymore, or they won't quote you at all. Annual multi-trip plans may not cover at all - the one I used for many years refused cover once I was diagnosed with APS.

If there are lots of health questions then it is very easy to get one "wrong" and then your insurance is worse than useless (e.g. have you had hospital out-patient appointment in last X months - does the warfarin clinic count?).

Look for one that asks the fewest and simplest health questions possible - along the lines of "are you terminally ill (no), are you travelling for treatment (no), or against drs advice (no)". The less there is for them to argue about the better.

I have actually switched to using tour-operator / travel-agent insurance - the standard advice to "decline and shop around" is for people without pre-existing conditions.

Over £100 may not be bad - I paid that last year, ok that was for 3weeks in France, for a family, but bear in mind that insuring a family is usually not much more than a single traveller and 2 or more weeks is usually not much more than one. Also I bought cover when buying the tickets, which will have discounted it a bit.

Thanks everyone for your replies, they have been quite helpful and hopefully I will get everything sorted soon :)

We've used our old company health insurance company for many years originally independently attached to the plan and now stand alone.

I have APS and asthma and my husband has had a heart attack. No quibbles and annual price is £300 for all the family for multiple trips less than 30 days.

We're with Axa PPP
