OK we know it's Xmas I'm on the night shift for a couple weeks. I am ill can't get appointment. Nose running sore chest I think I have a chest infection? I have spent past 2 days on parecetemol as was told if I was ever ill that's all I can take? I'm on 20mg xarelto.atorvostatin. I do realise your not doctors but wondered if anyone else has had this and what I could take till I get appointment. Merry Xmas everyone. Thank you. If you can help would be fantastic.

Personally I would ring the 111 service if in the UK and stress how unwell you are, and your underlying condition, and they should give you an appointment, if you can't have an urgent on with the GP, your surgery should let you in during their hours, but if not ring that, after they close. MaryF

Can only offer my sympathy for feeling rotten so close to Christmas. I know I can't take Ibuprofen (contra indicated on Xarelto) but perhaps a Pharmacy only product such as Cold and Flu tabs which can dry the runny nose as well as pain relief? (read the ingredients list carefully)

Lemsip capsules or tablets are really good, contain paracetamol, so dont overdose on the paracetamol. Can get with or without caffeine. The mixture really helps symptoms of cold/flu/coughing. Walk in centres can check if you have chest infection. Hope you feel better soon.

Maybe the stress of work and trying to work while feeling so ill is making you worse. You could be passing more infection on too.I would ring my doctors and have word with triage nurse

I avoided them because they just seemed Yeachy, but when I came down with a nasty cold last month the diagnosing doctor strongly recommended that I get a Netti pot a try. I'll never know for sure, because of course you can't give yourself a double blind test to see if this or that treatment really makes a difference – but IMHO using the Netty pot with a warm saline solution three or four times a day made a huge difference. The first two times I used it the whole process seemed awkward. But after that, I got used to it and again I believe it shortened my cold.

Thank you all so much. I called 111 got appointment doc gave me amoxacillin I told her my consultant said I can't take anything apart from parecetemol. I asked about lemsip etc but was told take to many medications to take more would be worse? I'm taking amoxacillin on day 1 now. Thank you all again. I try not to bother my doc. But she actually said was good to see me?? I'd obviously been through the wars since last time. I told her wasn't there about another stroke just chest infection. Nothing major. So again thank you, Mary I'm glad I phoned, not so snotty now . Merry Xmas everyone, good health to us all x
