Hi

Well, all kinds of things can affect INR but the most potent of these is Vitamin K intake. Consistency in Vit K intake is one of the keys to a reasonably stable INR but, in my experience when I was on Warfarin (now on Heparin) INR would be stable for a few days then go up or down for no apparent reason. Vitamin K antagonises the action of Warfarin and loweres INR. Alcohol enhances the action of Warfarin, in anything more than m,odest consumption, so raises INR.

How did you feel when your INR was 4.1? I can imagine how you probably felt when it was only 2.9.

Where abouts are you? It helps us to help you if you set your location on your profile.

Best wishes.

Dave

That is so FRUSTRATING!!! But you're in good company here.

One of the hallmarks of APS for many of us is unstable INR. That's why it's so important for us to check INRs often. I check once a week and even doing it that often, it's easy to get out of range.

Your range of 3-3.5 is relatively narrow and you might want to ask your doc if you can go to 2.5-3.5 or 3-4, depending on what's best for you.

I'm sure you're familiar with all the Vit K diet precautions. I eat loads of Vit K foods because I love my green veggies but I do it consistently so my warfarin doses are adjusted to accomodate.

Basic things like a minor cold, taking NSAIDs, gastric upset, travel, or a dozen other changes in our routine can alter the INR, as can adjusting the warfarin dose a little or holding a dose because it's too high.

I've often wondered if even emotional upset can change the INR. Does anyone know about that?

yes heparin is via injection

Hi there,

I do agree with Mair!

That was the story of warfarin contra APS in a netshell (Do you say that in England, perhaps not?)

Many of us with APS probably stop warfarin because we have not had the possibility to understand how it works and with doctors who know little about APS. It is sad to give up because warfarin can save your life.

Personally i have not noticed if emotional upset can change the INR. Kerstin
