Whats in season this August in the UK 🍅🥕🍏

Hi everyone,

August is upon is tomorrow and August is my favourite summer month even though I become very aware of the evenings drawing in by the end of August, which's what makes fruit and veg ripen.

So far I've harvested raspberries and gooseberries and I am very much looking forward to my tomatoes ripening as you cannot beat the taste of home grown tomatoes I have 6 plants all in pots and with ripening tomatoes.

I've heritage apple and pear trees growing but they haven't any crops yet but guess they need to establish themselves and I'm not a very good gardener.

My dad always grew his own tomatoes yes you're right you can't beat the smell and taste of home grown ones mmmmmm

Yes most of them were delicious. He did get a few 'rogue' ones as this photo shows-I can't remember whether anyone ate it. Probably not. It certainly doesn't look particularly appetising 😊

Yes. Strange. I'm sure Mr B could enlighten us as to why 🤔Dad grew small new potatoes, but I don't remember any wonky ones. And like tomatoes, much better eaten fresh from the garden🥔

I remember washing the potatoes for my Mum and the skins would just flake off as they were washed, the flavour was delicious! 😋

Oh yes. I remember that too. And then served with butter. Yum. It's making me think I might have a go at growing some next year 😁

If you have the space in the garden it'd be well worth it to taste that special flavour again we can't buy anything to equal it😋

No we can't. Even the local farm shop's ones don't come anywhere near it. I haven't got a much soil space but I think you can get special tall bags to grow them in.

That’s hysterical. You should have put it on eBay! My local store sells weird ones all the time but I bet they would have saved that for prepared food!

It was a very long time ago that it was taken At least 20 yrs I would think, certainly before e bay was around. Yes it is very funny. As dad was a great one for avoiding waste, I'm guessing he probably did eat it 😁

We have quite a few things to harvest at the moment, we are still picking the late strawberries and we grow late raspberries so they aren’t quite ready yet the rhubarb and blueberries are still giving and we’ve just started picking the brambles. We lost a lot of Apples, pears and cherries with a late frost. My granddaughter has made Grandpa promise not to eat all the peas before she comes on the 9th August. The Tomatoes in the greenhouse are slow to ripen but we are picking the Mascotta toms in the outside hanging baskets every day. Cucumbers are ready faster than can be eat so it’s unfortunate that I can’t eat either Toms or Cucumber. Lettuce are doing well and the Courgettes if not checked often enough end up as Marrows. Looks like we’re going to have a good crop of beetroot, and the French beans are doing very well although the runner beans are very slow this year. Most of our brassicas are for later in the year but we have some lovely ones we use for coleslaw. Lots of recipes seem to use Spinach which we are going to have a go at next year. Certainly kept busy on the allotment this time of year

Wow CTink I’m really impressed with how productive your garden and allotments are. Soft fruits like strawberries and especially raspberries don’t travel well so freshly picked and then served is the best.

I love the sound of your home made coleslaw as well as all your lovely fruit and veg.

You enjoy harvesting your crops and then eating them. 🍓😊

Jealous of your abundant local pickings. Don’t get me wrong… I live for 🌶. It is to dry to fill a local food restaurant.
