Tomatoes the worlds favourite fruit/veg but not in the UK. πŸ…...the champ is...πŸ₯¦

Hi everyone,

As Tomato fortnight finished yesterday I found it interesting that even though tomatoes are the most popular fruit/veg in the world a poll in the UK showed that Broccoli was the number one veg here.

The poll showed the top ten vegetables in order and our poll reflected the popularity of broccoli so I'm impressed folks so here's the top 10 from the original poll in order of preference:

Broccoli Sweetcorn Tomato Mushroom Carrot Pea Brussels Cauliflower Asparagus Green bean

And here's our poll where I had to compress the 10 choices into 7:

I love tomatoes and the photo shows my favourite organic cherry vine toms and baby plum toms.

Thank you everyone who participated in the poll as I think this is an interesting statistic.

Jerry 😊

I should have clicked on tomatoes in your poll. I eat them every day, sometimes 3 times a day. I buy them from my local farm shop and they know me now as I buy around 20 big tomatoes at a time and these last me a week. I’m looking forward to my lunch which will consist of, yes you’ve guessed it, radishes. Just kidding πŸ˜„

I really like tomatoes as an ingredient for cooking, but I'm not a fan of raw tomatoes, which is why I opted for something else!

People tell me that tomatoes in the UK are quite watery, but if you eat them in warmer climates (like Italy) they will be far more flavourful, so I wonder if that's why we're not big fans in the UK?

Hi Cooper, I wander if its how tomatoes and lots of veg are produced in big poly tunnels and fed hydroponically and they breed them for looks and not taste which's why I buy the ones that I do.

Here's tomatoes grown to be 13+M long that's nearly 50ft:

That might be part of it, but I also think it's to do with how ripe our fruit/veg is when we pick it. Most of our veg is picked before it's fully ripe, as that gives max. time for packaging, shipping and shelf life. Most people who grow their own, find the taste is substantially better.

In the uk cheap tomatoes tend to be flavourless bags of water. Expensive ones have lots of flavour. Not sure if there's much nutritional difference though, excepting brighter coloured foods are always preferable where possible.

Hi Hidden

I started reading your post earlier, and got distracted, but I love tomatoes, and really enjoyed the celebration of 'Tomato Fortnight' - especially a tomato and basil soup I had out in a cafΓ© - it was gorgeous.

I haven't done the poll yet, so I hope to do it soon.

Zest :-)

I must say broccoli is my favourite cooked vegetable, I honestly would eat it with any cooked meal, plus make soup with it too. But that said I love tomatoes, I just wish the tomatoes in the UK had more flavour, they are so good abroad. My favourites here are the mixed cherry tomatoes that come in a selection of red, yellow, orange and purple, they are so sweet I eat them as a fruit.

Not what you're looking for?
