Why Japan's towns and cities are litter free...

Good morning everyone,

I'm sure we have all seen litter and and over flowing waste bins, well did you know that if you go to Japan and are in a bustling city like Tokyo you will find it very hard to find a litter bin and if you ask someone they will politely offer to take it home to dispose of it for you!

They have bins at fast food outlets and street sellers will often take the litter back as most people stand still while they eat and or take their rubbish home.

The streets of Tokyo are fantastically clean and tidy and a credit to the Japanese so maybe we should take a leaf out of their book.

Here's an article about this:

I think that dropping litter is slovenly and selfish...😊

Hi Hidden

Thanks for sharing this really interesting article about Japanese culture and re-cycling. I enjoyed reading it. Thought provoking.

Hi Jerry this is very interesting. It just goes to show it can be done.

On a Sunday morning if you go to Whitstable the bins along the beach are over flowing with rubbish. They have a real problem there. When the bins are full people just keep trying to add to it rather than taking it away with them so you end up with rubbish piled up around the bin which is criminal in itself but to be right next to the sea it’s horrifying. There are a team of Whitstable residents that go out on a Sunday morning and take it upon them selves to clear any rubbish around the bins and particularly off the beach.

Here is a link to a local newspaper article (so you can see the pictures)

Haven’t got time just now to read article Jerry - a football match calls (I’m not playing I hasten to add!) - but that’s great to hear and it is certainly something some of the litter bugs we have here would learn from, I’m sure!

I completely agree re slovenly and selfish!!

Recently, when I was at the beach for a mini vacation, the trash cans and recycling buckets/bins were full and no one was taking care of them. It's sad that people don't fix anything and then everything over flows onto sand/street/beautiful land. :-(

Hi Hidden

Thank you very much for sharing the article. Every time I see rubbish on the ground it makes me so angry.

What an excellent article about Japan. I also think of Switzerland as I hear from many people that have been there how clean it is. I have said many times over that this country needs laws when it comes to recycling and rubbish but there seems to be no Government out there that will do this. Instead we live in what I only would describe as a dirty, filthy Country.

Whilst out on a lovely country walk today I came across not only rubbish but dog poo as well, I get so angry.

There are quite a few people in this country that have no pride whatsoever and don't think it's their job to pick up /take their rubbish home with them or pick up their dog's mess.

Clearly Governments (doesn't matter which Party as they are all the same) need to make a stand and stop arguing with each other and sort out this mess. We are struggling with landfill at present, what happens when we run out!!

Also, it annoys me when councils charge households for taking rubble to tips, rubble can be re-used.

Think I've said my piece but seeing how dirty our streets are saddens me greatly.

I agree Jerry. I would go so far as to say it's anti social, ignorant and selfish. People say they love their country / town/ county but are prepared to ruin it by leaving litter.
