Hi guys just after some advice has anyone tr8ed the keto diet and is it as good as people are making it out to be? I want to shift a couple of stone and nothing seems to work. I'm always active and I do eat quite healthily I just can't find the consistency and I read that the keto diet is apparently the best one at the minute

Yes I’ve done keto a few years back and lost 3 stone I recently tried it again but on a budget I found I was eating the not so healthy meats but if you like meat fish seafood and you can afford it go for it it stops the hunger feelings and that really helps I just enjoy eating rice potatoes and bread so couldn’t stick to it now days they calling it the LCHF low carb high fat diet in my day it was Atkins anyway have a good day whatever you choose. 😀

Ahhh that's the thing it's affording to stick to it 🙄🙄 it all seems is confusing. Thank you 😁

Yea I think the best thing is try not to eat processed foods cut out the junk and exercise whatever you like doing because like me if it’s forced then it’s not going to wrk so if you like walking cool swimming ? And don’t stress on the days you go wrong 😀

Yeah I don't eat a lot of junk apart from maybe a takeaway once a month but just can't seem to shift this weight. I'm quite slim everywhere else I just have a bit of a gut 😂😂 I might start swimming actually

Good idea I love to swim 😀 I’m sure you will achieve all you want 😀

I tried keto out of pure curiosity to see what it was about. You initially lose weight quite rapidly, 7lbs in a week for me, but it's generally just water weight to begin with (you have to pee a lot in the first few days).

I think it's possible to do keto while eating an entirely junk based diet (sausages & other processed meats etc), but I think you can also manage it with whole foods if you wish. I think the diet would be easier if you can eat dairy, but I can't.

I stopped after about 3 weeks - I ate something I'm intolerant to, and my stomach needed a rest and some simpler/plain foods like rice again for a bit.

Because I stopped it, the water weight came back, and the end result is a 5lbs weight loss over 3 weeks (but I only need to lose 14lbs, so that's not bad)

Yea when I done it as soon as I come off I put it all back on and more cos then you crave all you didn’t have sounds like your on track and 14 lbs that’s great I’ve got 6 stone to lose bit emotional eating going on at mo so need to focus more ☹️

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Grannysqua

Yes, I'm emotionally eating too because I'm not feeling great. On the other hand, my stomach feeling so uncomfortable means I can only eat small portions, so win some/lose some!

I keep hearing of the keto diet and I'm not too sure what it is! Could anybody shed some light please!

Thank you xx

Grannysqua profile image
Grannysqua in reply to traceyphillips

Ya I’m on a budget eating this way and I’m finding it to be quite costly. I like the results so far though. I also love eating meat b

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to traceyphillips

You limit carbs to less than 20g per day, later increasing to 50g if you can handle it. It basically means lots of eggs, cheese, meats, fats, oils and some low carb veg (like cauliflower, salad, green beans, mushrooms). You can do vegan keto though, if you don't wish to eat meat/eggs.

Thank you Cooper! Definitely going to give this a go! Sounds great! I love bread, so that's going to be difficult but worth it i'm sure!

I think the biggest hassle is just how inconvenient lunches become. 2 slices of bread and some sandwich filling is such an easy lunch. Sometimes you do get a bit tired of choosing between soup or salad!

I find diets so stressful! I really appreciate your help!

Giving up bread was the best thing I ever did.

Thanks for sharing the videos. I've watched a couple of them, but I'm a bit confused. One lady is suggesting butter is bad because of its saturated fat content (51%), but says coconut oil is a healthy alternative (87% sat fat). Do you know why saturated fat in coconut oil is healthier?

Don’t know who/ why "One lady is suggesting butter is bad because of its saturated fat content (51%), but says coconut oil is a healthy alternative (87% sat fat)", Cooper27.

Don’t know if "saturated fat in coconut oil is healthier [than butter]." 🤔

.

EatingWell’s "This or That: Butter vs. Coconut Oil" says: eatingwell.com/article/2838...

To query "is saturated fat in coconut oil better than saturated fat in butter?", Google comes up with: google.com/search?as_q=Is+s...

.

If you’ve time to fully explore all the resources 📚/ videos 📹 previously listed, Cooper27, fats (butters/ oils) are addressed.

.

Additional perspectives on fats [butters/ oils (to include coconut oil)]:

. . • "The Oil Problem": engine2diet.com/blog/the-oi...

. . • "… A slogan has arisen from these groups stating there are no strictly good foods or bad foods. This is sheer nonsense. Coronary disease has no building blocks from the plant-based diet. Meat, cheese, milk, butter, ice cream, eggs, fried foods, oils, and margarine are the lethal atherosclerotic lynchpins. Vogel demonstrated endothelial damage in young persons within hours of eating such foods. …" [ dresselstyn.com/site/plant-... ]

. . • Why does the diet eliminate oil entirely? NO OIL! Not even olive oil, which goes against a lot of other advice out there about so-called good fats. The reality is that oils are extremely low in terms of nutritive value. They contain no fiber, no minerals and are 100% fat calories. Both the mono unsaturated and saturated fat contained in oils is harmful to the endothelium, the innermost lining of the artery, and that injury is the gateway to vascular disease. It doesn’t matter whether it’s olive oil, corn oil, coconut oil, canola oil, or any other kind. Avoid ALL oil. [ dresselstyn.com/site/faq/ ]

Thank-you for the additional information, I'll try to watch the remaining videos when I have some free time. The lady I'm talking about is in the fourth video (Keto Diet Goes Wrong) approximately 7.5-8 minutes in. She is anti keto diet, because fat (and saturated fat especially) is bad for us, but she says a plant-based keto diet is quite healthy, because we get to eat lots of seeds and coconut oil.

I just find it confusing to hear conflicting information like this. I guess the mixed information is what drove me to try out the diet for myself, because I wanted to see what it involved.

In context, I took what Dr. Julie Chan said as being coconut oil is acceptable to vegan keto-ers, Cooper27, because coconut is a non-animal product whereas butter is an animal (non-vegan) product? 🤔 [Maybe I’ve misunderstood? 🤔 ]

Agreed, Cooper27; the way Dr. Chan has expressed fats/ oils (vegan compared to non-vegan fats/oils) is ‘fuzzy’ & even seemingly contradictory? 🤔 She immediately segues into saying incorporating vegan sourced fats (nuts, seeds, coconut/ olive oils, avocados … ) into diets of individuals who are low in ingesting these types of ‘healthy’ fats (to use her term) is a good thing.

The ‘take away’ (in larger/ full context) is keto can be useful for specific purpose/ specific time frame for specific individual circumstances.

As far as the fine-point (technical) distinctions between butter & coconut oil (other than 1 being sourced from animals & the other being sourced from plants), you’d have to ask Dr. Chan ( m.facebook.com/drjuliechan.nd/ ) for her intended meaning. 😌 🙏 🍀 🌺 🌞

Thanks for the feedback :)

I'd like to share this link to an introduction to LCHF. For me, it's more of a lifestyle than a diet. It's how I'm going to eat every day forever. It is restrictive in that I no longer regularly eat sugary foods, pasta and bread but get to enjoy real foods including protein, natural fats and vegetables every day.
