Air Fryer or Air Fryer Convection Toaster Oven?

.

Per usual, stumped πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ & bewildered πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ by mountains πŸ”β›°πŸŒ‹ of types of Air Fryers & Air Fryer Convection Toaster Ovens*. 😯

Oy vey! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

And, equally stumped 😳 & bewildered πŸ₯Ί by variety of online opinions πŸ—£ πŸ’¬πŸ’¬πŸ’¬ / reviews about each! 😲

[Analysis paralysis πŸ“Š 😡 ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ana... ) β€” information/ opinion overload ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inf... ) . 🀯 ]

.

πŸ€ͺ 🀣 πŸ™ƒ

.

Anyone have actual hands-on βœ‹πŸ€š experience with either or both of these β€˜new-fangled’ ☺️ appliances? πŸ€”

Would appreciate hearing your experience/ opinion. πŸ™ 😌

.

Have been looking for an "air fryer" device that meets these criteria:

. . . 1️⃣ Large πŸ‹ capacity. (For example, can make LOTs of sweet potato 🍠 & πŸ₯” β€˜fries’ in one go.)

. . . 2️⃣ Long lived β™Ύ & long warranty πŸ“œ . (These appliances are pricey πŸ’°πŸ˜³ , so would hope 🀞🀞 to get years of trouble-free use.)

. . . 3️⃣ Quiet 🀫 (as possible) πŸ™‰ . [Needn’t awaken the sleeping πŸ›Œ 😴 πŸ’€ (nor the dead πŸ’€ ) when device is β€˜on’ πŸ”† .]

. . . 4️⃣ Easy to clean 🧼 🧽 as reasonable. (The easier to clean πŸ› & maintain πŸ›  , the better. πŸ‘πŸ‘ )

.

[I know it’s asking a lot, but a person can dream . . . 😌 πŸ’ 🌈 πŸ¦„ . . . ] 😁

.

Or, is this merely yet another, short-lived β€˜fad’ 🀩 that’ll pass once the devices start β€˜faltering’ & make their way to the β€˜appliance graveyard’ πŸ—‘ β˜„οΈ β€” never to be seen (nor β€˜missed’) again? πŸ€” πŸ’

[That is, I’d anticipate using the β€˜Air Fryer’ routinely, as an essential appliance, such as a blender, food processor, juicer, toaster oven, etc. β€” not something that β€˜takes up counter space’ πŸ›Έ & only used β€˜occasionally’. ]

.

Thank you πŸ™ for reading πŸ“– & taking time ⌚️ to share your 1st-hand experience. Much appreciated. ☺️ πŸ™ πŸ€ 🌺 🌞

.

Oh, if you’ve particular brands/ models… to recommend, please note! πŸ‘πŸ‘ (There’s so many types/ models out there, am struggling 😣 to narrow down to just a few suitable options.)

Hi Kai, I have a Turbo Convection oven I bought on line from Wal Mart for about 35 dollars. Had it for a year and use it all the time. Works really good for many different foods , fish sticks, fries ect. Somethings the microwave is better some a regular oven, you just have to use it and you will figure it out. I can cut up potatoes, coat with oil and season. Place on rack and 20 minutes later they are ready and taste great. Today I may roast chicken legs, takes about 35 minutes. Just season and put on bottom rack. I never use top rack except for cheese toast, it is removable. In the summer won`t heat up the whole house like a regular oven and is faster. Not that hard to clean either. Good luck whatever you decide.

Excellent! Very good to hear, GERALDDAVID. πŸ‘πŸ‘

. . . βœ”οΈ it’s faster πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ. . .

. . . βœ”οΈ cleaning 🧽 isn’t that hard. πŸ‘πŸ‘

. . . βœ”οΈ $35 USD is reasonable price (considering so many of

I have a philips air fryer. It can prepare a dish for two people pretty well. I find it much better at doing things like falafel, veg chips etc.

Poked around for oil-free β€˜Air-Fried Falafel’ & saw recipe πŸ“ ( nutritionrefined.com/air-fr... ) with video πŸ“Ή , β€œFalafel: Air-Fried, Baked & Pan-Fried & Tzatziki Sauce | Vegan, Gluten-Free, Oil-Free": m.youtube.com/watch?v=C8Ad3...

.

.

Air-Fried Falafel

[Prep Time: 20 mins . . . Cook Time: 15 mins . . . Total Time: 35 mins]

.

Ingredients: . . . . Crispy Falafels (30 balls πŸ”˜ )

. . . . Metric (US Customary)

. . . β€’ 400 g (2 cups) dried chickpeas, soaked*

. . . β€’ 1 onion, diced

. . . β€’ 2 cloves garlic, minced

. . . β€’ 45 g (3/4 cup) flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped

. . . β€’ 15 g (1/4 cup) cilantro leaves, chopped

. . . β€’ 5.7 g (1 Tbsp.) chickpea flour

. . . β€’ 4.2 g (2 tsp.) cumin powder

. . . β€’ 4.2 g (2 tsp.) ground coriander

. . . β€’ 2.1 g (1 tsp.) ground black pepper

. . . β€’ 0.9 g (1/2 tsp.) cayenne pepper

. . . β€’ 8.6 g (1 1/2 tsp.) sea salt

.

Instructions:

1️⃣ Place all the ingredients into a food processor and pulse until the chickpeas are finely minced. Do not over-pulse - the mixture should be coarse, not smooth/paste-y,

2️⃣ Using your hands, shape the falafel mixture into small balls, about 1.5" (3.8 cm) in diameter. Arrange about 9 falafel balls in a single layer in your air fryer basket and air-fry for about 15 minutes at 370-380Β°F (187-193Β°C). Repeat this process until you use up all the dough. The falafel is done when it's golden brown and crisp.

3️⃣ If you don't own an air fryer, you can bake the falafel at 375Β°F (190Β°C) until golden brown, about 30 minutes, flipping once at the halfway point for even cooking.

You can also pan-fry the falafel in a little bit of olive oil over medium heat, until evenly browned.

4️⃣ Store leftover falafel covered in the refrigerator for a few days, though best when fresh. Reheat in a 325Β°F (160Β°C) oven/air fryer.

For longer term storage, place the uncooked falafel balls on a cookie sheet. Put the cookie sheet in the freezer for about an hour or so. Remove the cookie sheet from the freezer and place the falafel balls into a freezer-safe bag or a container and place it back into the freezer. To thaw the uncooked falafel, transfer it in the refrigerator the day before you plan to cook it.

.

Recipe Notes:

*Soak the chickpeas in water for 24 hours so they soften up. When the chickpeas are soaked, drain the water, rinse the chickpeas thoroughly, and use as instructed. Do not cook the chickpeas.

*2 cups dried chickpeas yield about 5 cups soaked chickpeas.

**Prep time does not include soaking the chickpeas (24 hours).

I have used both! My parents have the oven, and I have an air fryer.

The oven is limited - I'd say it's more like a replacement for a conventional oven. Doesn't do so well with more than one tray in it.

Air fryer needs to be stirred a lot, but because you don't have to spread stuff out, I'd say you have more capacity.

I prefer the air fryer, because I don't think the oven does much that a normal oven can't.

i'm 50:50 whether I'd replace the air fryer if it broke. It's good, but quite a space filler for how often we use it (about once a week).

Thank you kindly, Cooper27. ☺️ πŸ™

Excellent having experienced both! πŸ‘πŸ‘

Do you recall brand/ model of each? πŸ€”

.

Interesting to hear:

. . . β€’ the oven doesn’t do as well with more than 1 tray in. βœ”οΈ

. . . β€’ that air fryer needs to be stirred a lot but has more capacity. βœ”οΈ

Very helpful points to be aware of. Much appreciated. 😌

.

You’ve got me thinking πŸ€” πŸ’ too about:

. . . β€’ the oven being more like a replacement for a conventional oven ♨️ &

. . . β€’ the air fryer being a space filler (taking up counter/ cabinet space) β€” particularly if it’s only used about once a week & we’ve limited space. 😳

All excellent points! You’ve got my wheels turning {{βš™οΈπŸ§ βš™οΈ}} β€” mulling this over πŸ€” πŸ’ !

☺️ πŸ™ πŸ€ 🌺 🌞

.

Oh . . . yes, fully understand the weighing βš–οΈ : if it breaks do we replace it? Or, do we just β€˜do without’ or look πŸ”Ž for something different to do the job? These gadgets can be pricey πŸ’°, so it takes thinking πŸ€” through how we plan to use it, its practicality, & its actual functionality in our daily lives. It’s juggling πŸ€Ήβ€β™‚οΈ & weighing βš–οΈ multiplicity of factors. 😳 🀯 ☺️

I don't know the oven brand, but our air fryer is a Swann one, I think. It looks like the red one in the very centre of your photo.

I'd be tempted by an actifry, because it stirs continuously itself, but they take up even more space!

Our kitchen space is very limited too, and we have a handful of gadgets to deal with. This one is hard because it doesn't fit very well in any cupboards, so it's always out.

I know exactly what you mean with finite space. Things end up getting stacked vertically ↕️ (😯 πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ ) as horizontal ↔️ space diminishes πŸ“‰ when we "get prepping, rinsing πŸ₯¬ 🚿 , chopping πŸ”ͺπŸ₯’, cooking ♨️ 🍲 , washing 🧽 🧼 🍽 . . . even β€˜the floor’ ends up being a (temporary) β€˜holding spot’ of last resort! 😳 🀭 πŸ˜‚

Aside:

We’ve supplemented with small kitchen utility cart (on wheels) ( google.com/search?as_q=smal... ) & tried to β€˜make do’, Cooper27. 😌

Unfortunately, if we’re stuck with tiny (β–ͺ️) kitchen area , there’s not much more we can do to more efficiently use space when every square inch (horizontal ↔️ & vertical ↕️ ) is already occupied with essentials β€” even after we’ve β€˜purged’ πŸ—‘β˜„οΈ inessentials & β€˜reorganised’ πŸ”‘πŸ”’. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Oy vey! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

.

Lesson learned. πŸ˜–πŸ”¨ . . .

Never settle for β–ͺ️ kitchen (if at all possible) if daily, from-scratch, fresh food prep, cooking, storage, etc. is a routine ♻️ part of our (& our family’s) daily life!

The never-ending β™Ύ annoyance πŸ˜• , frustration 😣 , irritation πŸ˜– . . . 😳 😀 🀯 at trying to accomplish simple daily tasks with limited, β–ͺ️ counter space, β–ͺ️storage area, . . . is just not worth it.

[If one frequently dines out 🍱 and/or lives on takeaway πŸ₯‘ , a β–ͺ️ kitchen is likely a non-issue, but if you rely on daily, home-prepared meals πŸ₯£ πŸ₯— 🌯 🍲 πŸ› πŸ‰ , a β–ͺ️ kitchen can be a nightmare. πŸŒƒ 🌚 πŸ‘» πŸ™€ 😱 ]

The never ending juggling πŸ€Ήβ€β™‚οΈ (& literal balancing βš–οΈ ) of items & trying to β€˜make room’ for things & trying to safely accomplish tasks β€” doesn’t get easier. 😬

(If only we were aware/ conscious of that early on!! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ 🀣 ) . . . Oh well . . . "live β€˜n learn"! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ πŸ™ƒ πŸ˜„ . . . [Apologies for β€˜whining’ 😩 . . . πŸ™ πŸ˜” . . . So many folks have far more difficult situations. Petty β€˜moanings’ about β–ͺ️ kitchens (that would be a β€˜luxury’ 🏰 for many) smacks of ingratitude πŸ˜” β€” especially in light πŸ•―β˜€οΈ of blessings✨✨ one does have. πŸ™ 😌 ]

Hi Kai

I purchased a Black and Decker toaster oven with built in airfryer. Very excited!

I did read the reviews on the machine and many said it is very slow.

But using plant based meals, i thought that it may fry them faster. But it just made the top surface hard and no color to it. The middle portion looked uncooked.

I did not add any oil to it.

I kept increasing the time on it thinking it will work. But i guess i may have not learnt much about it. Returned as it was a few days old.
