Hi Margo12
I have tried the 5:2 diet in the past, but it didn't suit me personally - however, I do know that there was a past member of the Healthunlocked forums called gingernut49 - and if you have a look at her posts, she got on extremely well with that diet, and indeed was featured in a National newspaper too - so might be worth checking out her postings.
Also, Michael Mosely writes a lot about the 5:2 diet, and if you google his name, then you'll see his website as well - which might be helpful to you - I am pretty sure there are Facebook groups too where people get together to talk about the 5:2 diets.
Wishing you success with your goals, and hope you'll have a great week.

Only time I've ever done a prolonged fast was when I was eating low-carb; it was fine for the first two days, and I felt like it was time to eat by the end of the third day. Unless you are fat-adapted, you will almost certainly find it intolerable. The problem with the 5:2 concept is that it makes no attempt to control carbs, so your natural instinct will be to "carb load" on the free-choice days, thus completely defeating the object.
If you want to try fasting, you will get optimum results with a low-carb protocol in combination with 16:8 fasting. Very easy to adhere to.
Dear Margo12
What is your objective of planning to do 5-2 Diet?
(1) is it for your weight reduction ?
(2) is it for overall Health ?
(3) Are you a T2 and you want to control Blood sugar?
In my view 18-6 diet or even 16-8 diet with LCHF can give you a better result if you are overweight/obese or towards a higher end of BMI.
5-2 Diet was first discovered by Mr Michel Mosley- a British journalist which many people are following with 5 days full calorie meal and two days calorie restricted diet (600 kcal / day) .
However a lot of research has been done by Dr Jason Fung- a nephrologist on all kind of IF in general. He had written 17 blogs on different kind of IF which is very popular. Good read. Please do read before you try any kind of of IF. He is the final authority in IF.
I tried to follow IF with 16-8 LCHF diet for a week but later gave up as my weight started reducing. I am already towards the lower end of the BMI. Later i discovered that he had warned people with low BMI from doing any IF.
At best they can do 12-12 /14-10.
My experience was good. My BS improved. Got good sleep. Overall feeling of well being.
Thank you so much all! My objectives are weight loss and health benefits . I am currently 1 1/2 stone overweight and feel at 62 I need to address this as it has been creeping up . I will check out suggestions and hopefully get on a new road to healthy weight loss . I am a veggie but do eat fish .
There is a lot of evidence that eating just below your personal calorific need aids longevity. So if 5-2 helps you acheive that, great. If instead you binge over the 5 days to offset the 2 days, then it is not for you.
Very good point ! I did plan to consume sensebley on non fasting days and maybe some fruits and soups up to 500cals on fasting days . Plenty of water too.
I couldn't manage the 500 limit so in order to continue with it, I decided to limit it to 600 . And this has worked for me at a slower reduction which I'm happy with. Although I'm now in the Healthy weight range, I feel it is still too heavy for me and I am continuing with it most of the time, because I would like to be slimmer/ have less weight on me for health reasons and for a Wedding I'm going to in the Autumn.
Agree. My experience is following the advice from Dr Jason Fung from his book “The Obesity Code.” Low carb, high good fats. No fast food and cooking from scratch almost all the time. Good quality food as well.
I am trying to meditate daily as well.
