Fruit & veg, wholefoods, checkout. Very quick & cheap shopping. All the other food aisles are processed foods and/or animal products.

I linger around the pulses & nuts, too, as well as the herbs & spices. My eyes are trained for spotting >70% cocoa, & sourdough in the otherwise unhealthy aisles.

I do as well as they are my diet staples. Is sour dough better than normal wholemeal bread. I try and find bread with a higher protein and fibre content. The sourdough bread never has a nutritional value label on it.

Sourdough ranges from around 6-9g of protein per 100g,, more if it's the seeded type. I'm unsure about the dark rye that takes a long time to chew, so will check that next time I buy it. I have a seeded half baguette as a treat every few weeks, & that has 12g of protein. I fancied an avocado toastie this weekend, (great minds...) so bought a malted sliced sourdough that's 8.7g of protein & 4.1g of fibre, per 100g, or two slices.

I buy it for nutritional reasons as the gliadin (the protein that causes an antibody reaction & coeliac) & fructans that cause digestive issues for some folks, are broken down by slow fermentation. This makes it better for digestion, & also enhances mineral absorption, whereas normal fast fermented wheat & bread products reduces mineral absorption. It also tastes a lot better & has a much nicer texture! :)

ps I'm surprised the dark rye sourdough has less protein & fibre 6g) than the malted seed as there's more molasses than rye, >:( The supermarkets usually have nutrition lists for their products, so you could compare the type of flour used for a sourdough that's not labelled.

You made me smile. :-)

Thinking about it a bit more, I find it disorientating whenever they change the lay-out of my local supermarket, as then I just don't know where to find things. I prefer being able to find my way to the fresh fruit and veg and other fresh produce that I like. :-)

Me too. It’s a ploy to get you to buy more food. I just like to visit the aisles I want and leave. Going to unfamiliar supermarkets is a problem for me as well. I went to Sainsbury’s on my way home from work last week and ended up spending twice as much as planned. Luckily it was all healthy food.
