Slimming clubs as supposed to try it yourself.

Hi I've just started my diet and started wondering if it would be better attending a slimming club rather than trying dieting alone? I've tried diets before but the weight has always crept back on. Or is it just the fear of being weighed each week and not losing that makes the diet work? Anyone any ideas please! Thanks

I think someone said on here recently that any diet will work initially but its about carving your own path and doing what works for you.

Have you written a pros/cons list for attending a club?

I think one of the guys on here made a valid point too which is you pay £5-6.50 per week to stand on scales and then thats it- your on your own for the next 6 1/2 days but i think it does work for some people- and yes youre probably right its the accountability- but i can see that could be a problem too as you'd end up feeling resentful for the £5 during weeks you didnt lose or holidays.

On the other hand i would think they could be a good social gathering if you found the right mix of people...

Like all things i guess its personal preference but ultimately group or not - a lot of this journey is done alone (theres no-one standing guard over your eating habits- just you).

Only you can decide what's right for you

Best of luck whatever you decide : )

Yeah I know what you mean, I do think I would just be attending a meeting to basically "be weighed". I have thought of pros/cons and I do think I can take the elements of the diet and save myself x amount of money! I spoke to my niece today who goes to slimming world, she said its the weigh in that keeps her losing and she's lost over two stones so far! I will keep going on my own for now, I've lost 3lb so far this week! Yay ,🙌

The best way to lose weight is to choose something that fits into your lifestyle, that way you will find it easier to sustain long term. That's assuming your current lifestyle isn't awful.. huge fatty meals and no exercise would need a bigger change in lifestyle, rather than a few small changes :)

The biggest mistake most people make is trying to lose weight too fast by cutting calories too low. If you find out your Basal Metabolic Rate - just google there are lots of sites out there. I was told not to go below this.

If you need the support of a group then go to a club or perhaps find some friends and have a weekly meet up and weigh in. It worked for me when I did this at work with some friends. Add exercise daily like walking further or faster not all exercise has to be expensive Gym membership. Good luck!

I suppose over the years my lifestyle has improved greatly. No large fatty meals , at the end of the day most people know what they should eat, it's just implementing it! I eat relatively healthily all of the time, it's the sweet tooth that's my downfall! I luv chocolate! Although I only have it at weekend's. And if I have a cup of tea its hard to not have a biscuit! But I'm determined to do it this time! Sadly most of my friends aren't overweight, thanks for replying to my post! 😁

As you are all saying any diet works if you follow it. If you follow it. I have always known enough to sort my own diet. But what happens when you don't lose weight, or actually go up. Then it is really useful to have a resource to turn to or it is difficult to keep going. I am a Weight Watcher. They have an online option too. But I love my class. Our local leader is a star, she always knows the right things to say. She is there by phone, text and on Facebook if we need her. I have made really good friends in my local classes. We have our own local Facebook group so there is support during week, it includes 2 class leaders plus about 5 classes, so there is always someone who knows you and can help. The national website has quite good message boards and a help board too. You could set this up yourself. You could weigh at the local chemists, I know mine offers this. Go for a coffee with friends and discuss any problems, share any successes and tips. I think this would be a great resource for you as well alongside the NHS diet guidance. But the thing that really makes the difference is portion control, so weighing or measuring everything that you consume and writing down what you've had. Then you have the tool to tweak your intake because you know what you've done and what works or doesn't. I love the social aspect of sharing successes and failures with others. That is what keeps me going and I am down 5 clothes sizes now from size 24 to 14. Really struggling now to learn to maintain in the middle of my healthy BMI. It is the maintenance that I have never learned before. I used to be a yo-yo (serial dieter). But I realised that the top end was getting heavier every time I lost it and regained. It was starting to affect my health. But this time it has just clicked for the losses and I do think the social media support has been a real help so far. I'm still in there, battling at the moment but getting better.

Hi venusflytrap, well done with your weight loss! I do understand where you are coming from, it must keep you much more motivated to have so many resources at your disposal. Many times I've said " yes I'll join a slimming club this time" but when it comes to actually walking through the door I chicken out!! I'm embarrassed to be weighed by someone and I even know the person who does the weigh in at our local weight watchers so there's NO chance of going there! I'll keep going on my own at the moment and hope my willpower continues! Full of a cold today so feeling sorry for myself! Ha ha my mum always said "feed a cold, starve a fever" I'm trying not to do that though! Thanks for your reply, and good luck with the rest of your weight loss 😁

Funny!!! I was thinking along similar lines, and I do then when I'm at my lowest ebb or trying to find a solution to my weight issues !!! The answer is what you want it to be I guess ? I haven't got £5.00 each week to waste so I am sticking with the NHS plan & starting week 1 again....... Before I lost 10lbs in 12 weeks & was chuffed to bits 😊

I'm pleased I looked here, I've now made up my mind !!!! NHS plan it is......

With me I think " oh they've lost weight I'll give that a try" so over the years I've " tried" many diets! Or ive had a goal to lose weight for, ie holidays, special occasion. But after the event I've slipped back into old habits! This time seems different and I feel I can do this just for me! So I've taken aspects off different weight loss sites & so far so good! The thing is I will only stick to it as long as I don't get bored! So I luv looking on this forum for encouragement & there are so many inspiring people! Thanx for your reply! And good luck with the rest of your weight loss! :)
