You keep posting about your drinking. I suggest a visit to your GP to discuss how much you drink and why . That's a lot of booze .

Bonnie, Thank you for having the courage to post this. I have a drink problem that I have been struggling with this year. I live in Scotland and told my doctor, who referred me to counselling. That was helpful and I made progress, but due to other health problems I stopped going. Anyway, as of last week I got a serious wake up call and realised that my drinking was a bigger problem than I thought. The next day I decided to go to an AA meeting. Never been before, nervous as to what might happen, but was given a warm welcome. No pressure, all I had to do was listen. That's me onto my fifth day of meetings, I'm trying to go to one everyday. I have found it a great help. The people are terrific and all you have to do is listen. Everyone I have spoken to says the programme works. There is a complete cross section of society at all the ones I have been to, male, female, young and old. It may not be for you, but I thought I would post this anyway. Please feel free to reply to me if you wish.

All the best to you and please stay strong.

Gordon P.S. The fact that you know you have a problem is half the battle

6 years ago I went to AA meetings and was offered a place in a rehab hospital but I heard my friends mum went and came out worse

Hi Bonnie

Over the last few nights I have heard several other people like yourself say they went to AA then left after a while. Maybe it wasn't for you at the time. I have contacted the Glasgow Council on Alcohol again as they were very good for me and am on the waiting list. I'm not trying to talk down to you but six years is a long time and you may have a different outlook on AA. On Friday night there was a girl in her early 30s chairing the meeting who has been sober for 11 years. She went into rehab and she was adamant that it saved her. She done AA meetings everyday and it was just what she needed. All you've got to lose is a couple of hours of your time by going back. Anyway it's your life and your choice. Please stay strong and try and be open minded, and as they all say, fight the first drink. If the first one doesn't get you then you have won.

All the best to you

Gordon

Well done for getting to a meeting. It takes courage to walk through those doors and admit you are powerless over alcohol. I've attended for 5 years now and my life has changed beyond recognition. All you have to do is not take that first drink a day at a time and keep coming back. You won't regret it.

Hi Florence

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad you're doing well with AA. Everyone who does a share says that the programme has been a great help, and the number of people who say that being sober is terrific has been a revelation. All the best to you.

Thanks Gordon. Just keep going then get a sponsor when you meet someone whose sobriety you admire and they will take you through the steps. Your life is just beginning. Your new life without alcohol. Only today matters. Good luck.

Hi Florence

Thanks for the reply. I hope my life is just beginning. I will never forget 2015, and there's still 2 months to go. All the health problems I have had over the past year has been nuts, but alcohol has played a big part. I'm now onto my seventh day of sobriety and it's not been as bad as I had thought, but I know it's just one day at a time, and I have to fight the first drink. Anyway, onwards and upwards.

All the best

Gordon

Hi bonni1 at least you can see you have a problem which is a huge step forward. That was a lot of alcohol in a short time. Alcohol always sabotaged every diet I did and for 30 years I told myself I couldn't lose weight. Not just the calories in the booze but I ate a lot of crap when I drank and the next day craved carbs and sugar. I was on a roller coaster til I admitted I had a problem and addressed my alcohol intake. Happily things are much better now. Good luck with the plan. Have you got the app myfitnesspal. It's free and that will show you the empty calories in alcohol.

Yes I have it and I know it's all empty calories I swaped wine for vodka but then had wine on the 3rd night and went all out on cheese and junk food

Best to stop ....specially when you know you have a problem with it.

I manage to stop for long enough to...

Get a life...

There's only one way you can go when you have a drink problem. ....down.

Get whatever help you can get and be grateful for it.

Good luck.
