Got the e-mail from Headway yesterday with presentation of relaunch 5 year strategy

youtube.com/watch?v=6Tucp6S...

I've watched it twice and will watch again - so far I am left a bit cold, it's taken a year to come up with stuff I've been banging on about in my local group since I became involved during and directly after Covid.

Now to read the document.

Anybody else got any reactions?

Best wishes

Michael

The pdf is not exactly exciting either - I will discuss with my branch chair on Wednesday and maybe others at our group meeting in a couple of weeks. Lacks inspiration.

all of the things that they said they wanted to do is actually the same as I feel .. I only went to my local group once and they were very nice but I actually felt to well to be there na felt like I would go straight into the caring /support side of it which i normally would happily do but that’s the old me doing that , the new me needs a group like I feel I get on here .. sorry off track but if you are involved in your group ans have spoken about this with them I would be confused that this hadn’t been in the driving seat of Headway’s before . I am coming up 4 years this year ans know firsthand how bad the support/ rehab is for TBI in Cornwall ans from what I read it’s the same in other places … I’ve given up with the nhs and gone private once again to see a balance physio .. no one has ever done tests on me which has been amazing and know have exercises to improve something I didn’t even understand or know about before I went private to see a neurologist who requested my GP to forward my onto a neuro physio . Which doesn’t exist in Cornwall and my GP just put my name out to loads of places as he also has no idea … sorry this is so long … why are headways saying they need to make The heath system understand TBI injuries are here which is great but you say this has been spoken about before …? I would do anything to stop this heart breaking approach to a life changing situation .. not sure if that was a rant but I think the best I can do with all the information I’ve collected along the last 3 years plus is to stop others being treated the same … Sue 🤔

Good morning Sue

I haven't met a huge number of brain-injured people along the way but as far as I can recall every single one of us wants to make the whole help and support network that's supposed to be around us better for the people coming next. I say "supposed" because what ever Headway say, it is not there, quite a few of those not many I've met say they are where they are under their own steam without any help.

For me, Luke Griggs misses the whole point, his 5 year strategy is going where? Perhaps because I have a 26 year old brain injury I don't understand? Perhaps I'm just fluctuating?

Best wishes

Michael

I’ve only read the .pdf once and felt it was too dry and had very little impact on me. It seemed to be geared towards professionals and organisations rather than those with ABI and their carers/families. Maybe that was their point? Something for us carers and sufferers, written in a much less ‘corporate’ style would be of better use to us.

Agree Cinderella, as usual the Clever People deciding what we want and need without any REAL UNDERSTANDING of what the reality of a good clout on the head does. As far as I know neither of the 2 gentlemen presenting that video/the new Headway strategy are experienced in the actualité of having a brain injury.

I'm quite tired of professionals but recognise they are the only way to improve our situation generally.

Tbh I think you're entirely right that it won't be written for us - it's presumably written to lobby the new government. I don't think that's a bad thing - they're the ones who need to change the health care system, not us. (Though I've not read it yet so can't comment on the content).

I’ve done nearly 4 years and I would say the lack of support ( including pip system) and that’s not tablets, it’s honesty and not an other waiting list if in my case they dosnt even exist in Cornwall and the actual head injury has caused more anxiety in a difficult world .. how you have managed 26 years is amazing yet your still struggling to get people to see what it is like from our side of the fence sue 🤔
