You need to make sure you stay in touch with your consultant. Reach out to their secretary and ask for help. Not all GP's are experienced with dealing with Brain Injuries. Reach out to Headway aswell and say you need support. They should also advise you and keep in touch on a regular basis.
suffered a brain injury back in 2000 citizens advice is very helpful, try there, good luck & welcome to site!
After hospital care we're generally discharged into the care of our GP. But as GPs are notoriously ignorant of brain issues, they have a duty to refer you back to your neuro team if you're still struggling to cope after an initial period of adjustment.
But please bear in mind, post brain injury, how our pre brain injury lifestyles can be unmanageable, increasingly so after burnout from sustained efforts to return to that previous life. Often, by making changes, we can achieve a more fulfilling, stress free quality of life.
Stay in touch m'love.. Cat x
Thank you cat, for your thoughtful advice. X😊
all of the above, just smile to spite it!!!
Yes get headaches and issues with recall at work. Is there a manager or colleague you trust to explain how u are struggling with changes? You might not be the only one.
Would you be able to ask for an occupational health referral in work? I managed at last! to get condition management support and disability action involved to help with support at work. It has taken me some time to get help.
Thank you deborah27, I have got that now but am signed off for 2 months just now. I will rest. Just been diagnosed with functional disorder? I have full function if my limbs just pressure in head do neurologist nit much use. Thanks for your response.
Hello Letsrock, having a mild traumatic brain injury is considered 'functional' when the symptoms stick around - I've just found this explanation on the web -verywellhealth.com/organic-...
A lot of the diagnoses we get post concussion, sort of sound like no-one believes us at the time, but the neuro professionals are fully aware of the difficulties we face, even if they are sometimes poorly communicated and defined by them.
One problem is that a doctor can't fish out a living brain and have a good look at it, and that the advanced scanners like fMRI that do pick up differences in brain function are only available in research settings (they're relatively new - you will see the differences in brain research published pre and post around 2014)
What the functional diagnosis means is that they believe that you have something wrong, which you can't help, which is affecting you considerably, but it's something that can't be easily measured at the moment by science as it is now. Plus all they can do to help is deal with the symptoms and see if they can be alleviated.
I was essentially privately prescribed rehab which was neck manipulation by a sports physio, graded exercise, repetitive exercises to improve oculomotor and vestibular problems, an antidepressant with a pain relief effect, and talking therapy to coach me to give me fatigue management strategies. Did it improve on things for me - yes remarkably so. Did it fix me entirely, no, unfortunately. Am I still seeing measurable improvements - yes, certainly.
Perhaps ask Headway what they think you can do next now you have a diagnosis?
Hi painted girl, thank you, they are doing an mri and taking blood tests. Am being told by gp that it is just stress and my body cannot cope anymore.
Glad you are being checked out. You probably are stressed, but it may well be the effects of the original bi at the root of things. Traditional anti stress things like gentle walking, getting sleep, eating a balanced diet, and trying out meditation can help both. How did you get your brain injury?
