Dear fifty123r,

Can I suggest that it's 'High Time', your Hubby, had a Review! Yes Everything, his Condition , Medication(s), Life Style, Any- and all- 'Changes' in himself (Changes in Hearing, Taste, Food Choices, even Music/ TV Programs.... and especially 'Tummy' Problems, Aches & Pains, the Lot,)

Changes in General 'Mood' are also Important, but often 'Difficult' to Note- when that 'Off Day' becomes most of the Time! Is your normally, Very Placed' Hubby suddenly Threatening 'Violence'? (Has the Poor, normally Much Loved, Dog 'Copt It', for example.) Are his Favourite Grandchildren suddenly Out of Favour, His Best Book 'Cast Aside'?

As I Said Subtle but Significant Changes, especially if Put Together!

I'd get an Appointment, As soon As You Can Babe, and 'See', if YOU can Accompany him to it.

Lastly I, really Do, send you Both My

Very Best Wishes

AndrewT

Excellent News, that you are 'Seeing' the same Doctor/ Consultant- this should save a Lot of 'explaining',

As I said 'above'..... Just ensure that you report all Changes, Big and Small. Can/ will you Let Us know, please babe?

Very Best Wishes, to you Both

Hi fity123r, I have been on mitazapine in the past, and I don’t recall it making me sleep like this, what I would do I would request a medication review by his gp, he really shouldn’t be sleeping through meals, it maybe he shouldn’t be on both medications. I haven’t heard of melatonin, but if that’s for insomnia too then maybe he needs to come off one of them. It could also be that some meds build up in the body either way the gp will have to sort as he may have to reduce gradually hope this helps love Alice xx

hey thanks foe ur reply your right he shouldn't be on both as they both cause sleepness we did have a gp review in March where the gp took him on melatonin but he would not sleep all night or he will be restless all night so the gp put him back on it in June

my experience with mitazapine is that the lower doses act like a sedative and as you up the dosage it stops making you feel so tired, I would look into increasing his dose before you move on to another medication as his body has already adapted to mitazapine

Hi, I would think that the melatonin would be more likely to cause excessive drowsiness, it does this by its action, but although it causes drowsiness, it doesn't give restful sleep, you can experience vivid dreams, and nightmares.

I agree that a review of his meds should take place.

hello pairofboots your right melatonin does give u some weird side effect but when the gp took him of it in March he would not sleep so he had to put him back on it in March because he didn't want to giv him anything stronger thank you for replying back to me

good afternoon,

Really sorry to hear this, and speaking from 1st hand experience, have trialed Mertazapine myself a few months back post TBI.

I can only speak from my own experiences, so please remember that everybody reacts slightly differently to medications.

I did have an absolute struggle and uphill battle with Mertazapine, as it made me ridiculously fatigued and I also put on a lot of weight.

After 8 weeks I had to change over to Sertraline.

I was advised by a specialist neuropsychiatrist that Mertazapine wouldn’t work well for somebody that has suffered a TBI, because our systems are now more sensitive to fatigue. He also did state that a lower dose, being 15mg would act as a sedative and you must increase the dose to combat this - I however, wasn’t brave enough for this as it’s side effects were too powerful for me.

I genuinely hope your husband can see a GP and perhaps trial a new medication with less sedative swift effects.

Final note - he is very lucky to have such a supportive wife, good job!

hello forrest 1512thank you for your reply I actually did not know that its not good for people with brain injuries his been on it for 2years now and maybe that's why his always sleeping or maybe fatigue kicks in I actually did hear one of his nurse say the less dyou have of mitazapine they more active you are because this is how he was wen he was in rehab after his brain injury either he will sleep for 18hrs straight or would not sleep at all

I do actually got him an appointment for his rehab consultant I will discuss this with him

I really wish you the best for your recovery

No a doubt that especially as he's been on it so long I am on a higher does and other medication that effect your sleep 😴 enough to tranquilise a horse and doesn't effect me with sleep just at night but apart from that I am fine

dear fifty 123r,

I think metazopine increases your bodies natural ability to secrete melatonin. This along with taking melatonin over the counter and also taking metaopine that has sedating effects could be over sedating him. Hopefully you get your answers soon. I know you are worried. Hang in there

hello kbradley181 I am worried but your right to much drowsy meds are just making things worse he was improving so much a couple of months ago I just don't want him to go back a step I just want him to move forward now but if his sleepy all the time it's impossible for me to do anything it's far to dangerous xx

I agree. You have to weigh the risk vs. the reward. Food and nutrition are so important. Hopefully his team of doctors can find a good balance for your husband so that he isn’t sleeping all the time but also doesn’t revert to not sleeping enough again. You are doing such a good job with your husband. I hope you are taking care of yourself too?
