hey all,it has taken me a couple of days for all that happened on wednesday to sink in and process.now ive done this i realise the reason for the physio lady was at meeting, and a g.p had also visited beforehand was an operation was mentioned.i was wondering if anyone can give me some info about this?due to seans b/i his left side has spasticity,in particular foot/hand which are very "fixed".botox injections have been helpful regarding his shoulder/elbow.i havent done any research yet but im assuming an operation would be to stretch, release the tendons?any feedback would be appreciated.had to smile yesterday, took a call from unit asking if i had taken home a necklace that sean was apparently wearing on wed(i didnt notice)it was a £10 "hammers" cheap thing that kept snapping.sean had them turn his room upside down the maintenence guy had even checked washing machine pipes.got another call to say they were really sorry they hadnt found it but a replacement had been ordered.sean had told the young lady,"you better find it or im calling my mam and you dont want her coming in again"this is the old classic sean letting them know their place and our advantage.i felt he deserved a little payback/sport(i know my boy,he has that necklace hidden somewhere!)i allowed until about 8pm and told him to stop.never in his nature to be nasty, but i think he has been pushed.woke up this morning to msg asking for another footie shirt,i wrote back nice try lad not happening!!

Hi D, I think he’s been pushed too, and this is his way of getting a bit back, even if it means you’re the dragon lol. My sister used to live next door to me and I was always stricter but fair with the kids when they were younger, and if hers were misbehaving she would threaten them with I’ll send you to aunty Als , think it’s along those lines, if it keeps them on their toes it’s not a bad thing. I should imagine all the other staff should be aware of what happened now and the decent staff will be as shocked as anyone and will want to distant themselves from it. Take care my friend love Alice xx

I think we know where Sean gets his devilment from !

Regards the spasticity - the following excerpt from an article in the 'Journal of Musculoskeletal Surgery and Research' talks of possible surgery after one year post Bi and where other methods of treatment have failed :-**********************************************************************************

The surgical treatment for upper limb spasticity may be considered after at least 1 year has elapsed after the brain injury & after conservative treatment has failed and when no further neurological recovery is expected. Surgical treatment options include (a) soft-tissue surgery such as muscle or tendon lengthening, tendon transfers and selective or hyperselective neurectomies or b) bone/joint surgery such as joint fusions or bone excisions, such as proximal row carpectomy (PRC). There may be a need for a combination of a number of the above categories of surgical techniques.

Operative treatment is irreversible, and the results are permanent. Operative treatment aims to decrease, eliminate or redirect muscle forces, mobilise stiff joints, restore balance to joints or stabilise joints, but it will not restore voluntary control to muscles or increase muscle force generation.

**********************************************************************************

You might need a cuppa or two & dictionary to absorb this lot. Sorry I've no direct knowledge or success stories D.... E Xx

Hi DBHI would get more info and maybe call Headway? Ask to talk to families where people have had it done?

Many years ago I was acquainted with a foster family and the docs wanted to do some sort of op on him that sounds like the same one. It was a common op at the time, but they knew about the side effects/downstream and thought it was a bad idea - luckily for the young man his Mom was still his parent, she hadn't made him a ward of the government, so she said no.

It isn't reversible and so it may have long term disabling effects. It may be being suggested , for example, to save them money - and in his current situation he may not, for example, be co operating with therapy to help address it another way.

It sounds serious and who knows, it may be right for him, but I would want yo know a lot more about it. And who knows , he may do better at the new place.

If it were me, I'd research. And also, given the situation at his current place, I wouldn't be agreeing to anything like that. No reason it can't wait and be discussed again after he has settled in at the other place.

It also seems to be the wrong time to have him undergo something like that.

Just my 2 cents worth, if course I don't know for sure, I just feel you don't have enough info and Sean hasn't been somewhere that really supports him. In other words, it may be the place, not his situation, per se.
