Wet room

Advice please, my husband sustained a TBI 3 years ago and spent a full year in hospital. I have approached the council about putting a wet room in as our shower is over the bath and he struggles getting in and out, even with handrails. The OT assessed him and said yes he definately needs this doing, it's only a small bathroom and it's also downstairs. The means test lady rang, John is on highest PIP and highest ESA but because I work 20 hours a week we have to pay half, which aquaits to £3400. We don't have that sort of money spare going from 2 full time wages to benefits and part time work. Has anyone any experience of this and if there are any ways of getting around this. Is it worth speaking to citizens advice?

Hi Eltonsilver,

I don't live in the UK so I can't say, but if your system is anything like ours, you figure out pretty fast to ask everywhere. Even if you asked before a year or to ago. Cause sometimes you get different answers. ??

Squeaky wheel and all that.

Keep us posted.

I used to be a citizen advocate in my area. This is someone who is interested in helping you at meetings with the council or other authority, by being there, batting on your side. The CAB is there for exactly that reason, and you should see them as soon as possible.

Good luck.

Yes - do talk to Citizens Advice. They can help you make your case and it could take some of the pressure off you. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi, my friend recently has had a stairlift fitted through his O.T. I found out there is a fund available which you can apply for which might help. My friend is on a pension but only paid £900 towards it. The cost was nearly £4,000 as he needed a new front door to open outwards and they fitted a nice level ramp out the front of the door too. He's very pleased with it. He's got. TBI and recently osteoarthritis in his hips which made going upstairs in his flat difficult. Good luck. I hope you get some help.

I applied to the Council for a wetroom and after 6 months they have started the process of getting it done. This was done via the Finance team at the Council, as they have been helping me with getting PIP and any other benefits I could be entitled to. You must go back and ask for a review.

The problem seems to be that I work a week seems so unfair

I work but only 2 hours a day (all I can do) and my husband is self employed, it’s taken 4 years to get help. I kept falling out of the bath (have shower over) and regularly headbutt the sink or radiator and had several bruises and cuts - the Council came out a day after one fall so got to see what happened! They have been great and installed handrails everywhere for me too. From what I’ve heard it’s a bit of a lottery in which Councils help

The occupational therapist assessed him and said he really needs it but it's the finance side. He got stuck in the bath and the shower is over the bath and has handles to get in but nothing to help him out, just the way the bathroom is.
