Hi, I suffered moderate/severe TBI - Subarachnoid Haemorrhage after a fall in October 2022. I am told that the injury was serious, although I was only kept in hospital for 5 days for monitoring, was on anti seizure meds for a week after, was then discharged and left to it. I am seeing Neuropsychology & Physio for BPPV issues, otherwise I am discharged. I am extremely!!!! lucky, don’t feel though the after effects have been too bad for me …. but wondering how I can have minor symptoms when I am told the injury was severe! I am just over 3 months into recovery and feeling mostly back to myself again, although suffering with mild fatigue. Is this strange ?? I don’t under stand! I know I am extremely lucky but can’t help but worry that because of the severity, something nasty will come round the corner!

Hi, sorry to hear that you had that trauma and what you went through. I have been through the same in November last year. I was tired every single day and would sleep for at least 2 hours twice a day but now 3 months after recovering i only sleep at night time as its worn off during the day. I was told by physio and others at appts that your brain needs to rest so it makes you sleepy. It will eventually wear off that it needs to sleep as its healing the fantastic way it is. I am so happy to see you are back or nearly back to yourself, I wish I was! I take my hat off to you for the effort in recovery you have made to cope with and how amazing you are doing.
Hi, severe relates to a Glasgow Coma Scale score which measures your level of consciousness. It's not a measure of brain injury.
Your CT scan confirms there is fluid on your brain.
Your neuropsychology test results measure your brain function capacity.
So your overall results show you had a lack or reduced level of consciousness for a period of time, less than a week is moderate; the CT scan confirms you had a brain injury and your neuropsychology results show you have mild functional incapacity.
You'll be right as reign after some rehab, reducing stress and worry will speed up your recovery. If possible try to see it as an adventure and record your experiences. Stay positive and never give up trying to recover.
Thank you - Since being discharged it’s been difficult to understand what’s actually happened. When I was inpatient I could barely walk let alone thing of any questions! I really appreciate your response
Hi sunny, the way severe, moderate, mild are banded is slightly misleading. Similar to acute and chronic. In medical speak, they have a defined meaning, but this doesn't necessarily translate to everyday speak. Any head injury can be considered as a serious injury. The resulting affects are determine by what deficits we experience and how we can or cannot recover, or regain. Something can be medically serious, but have little ongoing effects, whereas mild, could result in very long-term debilitating problems. Hope this makes sense 🍀
Sounds like you’ve been very lucky. Don’t go looking for issues that haven’t arisen. Don’t fight the fatigue, as it is perfectly normal after any sort of brain injury. Fingers crossed your issues will always be minor.
