Ltach vs snf

Any anoxic brain injury patients know much about ltach hospital care? My sister is being released from hospital but is in vegetative state (so they say). Is ltach the way to go, will they wean her off vent? How would a skilled nursing facility do? Any experiences with either? In Bklyn NY

As I understand it Angech, long term acute care hospitals cater for patients who have complex conditions but who no longer need intensive care. These hospitals specialise in treating ongoing, serious medical needs which can't be met by rehab units.

I doubt they'll remove any essential support apparatus until safe to do so. If they were intending to withdraw care they wouldn't transfer your sister to a LTACH but to a hospice or nursing home, or back to her own home if full time care were available.

A skilled nursing facility might might lack the necessary level of expertise and high tech amenities to offer the level of care for your sister's needs ? If in doubt though, you could contact the helpline on 0808 800 2244 where you'll get more sound guidance.

Good luck m'love ; I hope you'll soon find answers. x

The hospital said they will be able to wean her off the vent. They also said any vent place or SNH will wean her, which is what they want. Is there a collar they put on to train them? Not sure how it works.

No I don't know either Angech and don't fancy Googling it in case your sister's issues are complicated. But I'm sure the doctors will gladly explain the steps of weaning off. From the little I know, extubation is a very gradual process involving test periods of independent breathing, close monitoring of vitals, watching & waiting and removal of mucous.

It's a pretty straightforward procedure for nursing staff but too complex for most of us to discuss competently ! And every patient is different from the next so allowances will be made for each individual.

Hope all goes well m'love ; let us know... x
